Canon Malaysia Unveils EOS M100 Mirrorless Camera

23 Nov

The Canon EOS M100 has made its debut in the Malaysian market from today as Canon Marketing Malaysia held a media launch for it this morning. The eagerly-awaited EOS M100 represents the latest entry-level model in Canon’s EOS M mirrorless line-up, following on the success of the existing EOS M10. As with the EOS M10, the new EOS M100 is designed for smartphone upgraders or Instagram “storytellers”, thanks to its ultra-simple exterior controls and a smartphone-style touchscreen interface with a 180º flip-up Selfie screen.

The 180º flip-up screen is way better than the version found on the higher end EOS M5, which is designed with Selfie in mind but more for advanced shooters. With today’s Selfie/WeFie generation, any camera that is isn’t designed for this purpose won’t gel with the Instagram (IG) users.

It’s designed for simple sharing of images on social networks, with built-in Wi-Fi and NFC and an always-on Bluetooth LE connection for automatic image transfer from your camera to your smartphone. If you think Instagram rather than Lightroom, you won’t be far wrong. Inside, though, the EOS M100 has Canon’s latest 24-megapixel Dual Pixel CMOS sensor, the same technology that features in DSLRs and mirrorless models much further up the product range. It delivers fast autofocus and great picture quality.

The EOS M100 comes in 3contemporary colour schemes of Gray, White and Black. In my opinion, the Black version stands out the best for men. However, for most IG users, the Gray and White would be the obvious choice particularly for the ladies. During the launch, I had a hands-on with the White version as it was the unit placed on the table I had seated with.

While the outer appearance looks great thanks to its compactness and lightweight on the outside, Canon has pushed all the technical stuff inside, where it can only be accessed by tapping on the interactive touchscreen interface. This makes common adjustments like exposure compensation, white balance, exposure mode and other functions a little trickier to access for people with large hands/fingers such as me. There’s no electronic viewfinder (EVF) built-in either. Given the customer base it is intended for, I don’t think the lack of an EVF is a major issue at all other than serious photo enthusiasts.

The above image, which was snapped via the higher-end EOS M5, demonstrates the ability of the EOS M-series in capturing background bokeh, which is impossible to be rendered with a smartphone optically unless it is achieved with certain apps.

Bridgestone Malaysia Introduces New Ecopia EP300-series of Tyres

08 Jun

ECOPIA-EP300-1With over 20 years of experience in developing state of the art technologies and technical know-how to design high performing eco oriented products, Bridgestone is proud to unveil the new Passenger Radial ECOPIA EP300 Tyre. EP300 is positioned as next generation ecotyre that offers low rolling resistance and superior wet grip performance while delivering an extended wear life. Through the innovative design concept and engineering solutions adopted, EP300 revolutionizes and redefines the concept of an eco-tyre by bringing it to the next level as embodied in its tagline “When You Want It All”. Demanding Drivers that “Want it all” have now available in the market a product that will fully meet their expectations.

Inherent in the ECOPIA family, EP300 is tested and proven to achieve significant fuel savings of up to 2 liters1 every full tank compared with conventional tyres. In tests comparing EP300 to previous ECOPIA generation2 , the results demonstrate that the new technologies and design concept adopted for EP300 help to achieve an improved fuel savings, while offering drivers additional travelling distance of up to 11.2 km3 per tank and a superior wet grip performance for a safer drive.

“Most drivers desire a way to achieve better fuel efficiency that translates into fuel savings. However, despite how careful drivers can be on the accelerator, if a vehicle is not equipped with the optimum eco-tyres, achieving good fuel efficiency and economy will be a challenge,” commented Tai Kawasaki, Managing Director of Bridgestone Asia Pacific Technical Center. “With the new ECOPIA EP300, we aim to bring drivers the best possible return from their vehicles while allowing them to do their part for the environment, as lower rolling resistance brings reduced CO2 emissions.”

Fuel Efficiency  EP300’s low rolling resistance brings fuel efficiency to the next level. This contributes to daily fuel savings and less CO2 emissions, reducing the vehicle’s environmental footprint.  Compared to previous ECOPIA generation, EP300 offers even further savings by traveling up to an additional up to 11.2 km per full tank.

Boon Siew Honda Unveils 2017 Honda Wave Dash 110 FI

21 Mar

The invitation reads as a “special preview of a new Honda motorcycle with fashion show”. Given the way the word “preview” was used instead of the normal “launch” on previous unveiling, this event ignites the imagination of many motorcycle media in the country. All except me. I had a feeling the incorrect term was used, and thus, the excitement level remains normal for me.

The preview isn’t going to be about any of the motorcycles Honda plans to launch for 2017 albeit in the 2nd half of the year instead of the anticipated 2nd-quarter (April to June). Nope, the said preview is not about the Made-In-Indonesia CBR250RR, the Made-In-Japan CBR1000RR/SP or the Made-In-Thailand Rebel 500 cruiser.

It is just another updated kapchai motorcycle, from the ancient carburetor to fuel injection (FI), this time on the Honda Wave Dash 110. For every 1 model of a big capacity machine launched, there would be several models of the kapchai/scooter in Honda’s line-up for the Malaysian market being launched, and it is no difference this time.

To be fair, there was no launch of any big capacity Honda bikes in Malaysia since July 2014 with the pair of CB650F/CBR650F and a revised CBR250R. The 2016 CB500-series trio quietly made their entrance into the local market in beginning of September 2016 while the 2016 duo of the CB/CBR650F repeated that feat just before the Lunar New Year holiday in 2017. Between the July 2014 event and today’s unveiling ceremony, all the bikes launched by Honda have been kapchai and scooters.

Almost every specification of the revised Wave Dash 110 is the same as its carburetor version, save for the fuel injection, and pricing. But the switch to fuel injection allows for better fuel economy, enabling the motorcycle to cruise as far as 244km of mileage until the low fuel gauge warning starts flashing. This is an improvement of some 10km over the estimated 234km on the older model. Honda also claims an improved fuel ecoomy of 61km/litre in cruising mode when riding at 80-90km/hr speeds.

The new Wave Dash 110 FI comes in 3 colours: Pearl Nightfall Blue, Pearl Magellanic Black and Vivacity Red as well as the exclusive Repsol edition. It is available in S Type (single disc brake), with both R Type and Repsol edition featuring Double Disc Brakes. The sales prices for all 3 types (with GST) are RM5,860.74, RM6,178.74 and RM6,337.74 respectively. All models come with the standard 2-year or 20,000km manufacturing warranty, whichever comes first.

FUJIFILM Malaysia Rolls Outs X-T2 and instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-2

18 Aug

instax SP-2

Fujifilm Malaysia today launched its largest on-ground brand activation – unveiling two exciting new offerings, Fujifilm X-T2 camera and instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-2 – while showcasing the company’s heritage of creating people-driven innovations in conjunction with World Photography Day.

Fujifilm Shoot.Print.Share Fiesta, held at Berjaya Times Square from August 18 to 21, aims to create a warm, welcoming and dynamic environment for guests to spend quality time exploring new ways to enjoy photography and raise the level of creative output to new heights.

X-T2-1 X-T2-2

Speaking at the launch of the fiesta, Fujifilm Malaysia Managing Director, Yoshitaka Nakamura said the Shoot.Print.Share Fiesta celebrates the company’s heritage of creating people-driven innovations by presenting a broad spectrum of digital imaging products and services that help enhance the quality of life.

“Throughout the four-day festival, Fujifilm will together with our customers create fun memories by capturing beautiful moments, presenting enjoyable and personalised printing and facilitating the sharing of priceless moments,” he added.

The Fujifilm X-T2 is a speedy upgrade to the X-T1, which Fujifilm describes as “Creative Perfection” that uses advanced technologies to achieve premium image quality, outstanding operability and beautiful design reminiscent of traditional cameras.

The new hybrid AF system boasts 325 AF points, including 91 zone focusing points (up from 49 in the X-T1). This new system paired with several algorithmic improvements makes for a “dramatic improvement” in performance. Fuji is promising “accurate focusing is all shooting situations, even in low light with a -3EV.” AF-C has also been “significantly enhanced,” promising better tracking of moving subjects.

The X-T2 combines the sensor and image processing engine developed by Fujifilm, with an ultra-sharp range of FUJINON lenses for excellent image resolution.  Fujifilm’s color-reproduction technology, formulated over 80 years, delivers images of unparalleled quality and realism, recording a subject’s textures, three-dimensional feel and even the atmosphere surrounding it.

The X-T2’s compact and lightweight camera body is also dust-resistant, water-resistant and capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C.  Its autofocus and electronic viewfinder performance have both been substantially improved, making it more adaptable than ever before at shooting a moving subject under difficult conditions, such as sports or wildlife photography, which had previously been considered difficult with mirrorless cameras.

For the first time in the X Series, the X-T2 supports 4K video recording.  And as expected by photo enthusiasts familiar to FinePix cameras, the X-T2’s video mode can utilise the popular Film Simulation mode to easily produce premium-quality footage.

It’s “Double Double” via YES 4G LTE Plans with YES Altitude 4G LTE Smartphone

30 Jun

When YTL Communications had unveiled its YES 4G broadband back in late 2010, I was among the early adopters of the plan, albeit a few months later. Even then, the brand itself faced criticisms from rival telcos and non-users alike who brush it off by telling consumers that the wireless system used by YES 4G wasn’t a true 4G spectrum but a marketing gimmick to entice users to sign-up.

I was shifting to a new home where Telecom Malaysia’s (TM) Unifi service was yet to be made available in early 2011, and the YES 4G plan was an excellent choice for me while waiting for Unifi or’s broadband service to be ready. Technically-speaking, the area of my new home is located within the latter’s broadband network but the service is still not available even today while TM’s Unifi made its debut approximately 2 years after I had moved in.

In the meantime, my Internet needs was taken care of by YES 4G’s prepaid service which I had subscribed via its compact dongle system for 10GB of data per month. Unlike Unifi, which is unlimited data, the YES 4G module was enough for my usage then as I did not download movies nor music since my occupation is related more towards receiving/sending images to clients as well as uploading them to this blog and Facebook. And sending/receiving email.

Being new, events organised by YTL Communications for its YES 4G broadband then had only attracted small groups of tech media and guests in attending. Today, just 6 years after its broadband first rolled out, the company is ready to launch its full-fledged wireless 4G network, and the crowd is definitely bigger, enough to fill the entire Grand Ballroom of the Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur!

With the official launch, consumers across Malaysia can now experience blazing fast Internet data speeds services with an impressive 85% nationwide coverage. The 4G brand under YTL Communications is also the first mobile operator in the country to introduce Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) capability for high-definition, crystal clear calls. At the same time the YES Altitude, the newest, high quality Android device developed by YES, was unveiled as the most affordable VoLTE smartphone in the Malaysian market, allowing more consumers to access high speed LTE Internet.

CEO of YTL Communications, Wing K. Lee enthused about building the most advanced 4G LTE network on top of the existing YES 4G broadband that has reached a nationwide footprint in Malaysia: “We started the journey with 4G Mobile Broadband and are now excited to complete the journey with the launch of 4G LTE together with the country’s first VoLTE service. We are proud to help Malaysia leapfrog to a high income economy through the provision of these new services.

“We are also proud to launch the country’s first Double Data bucket price plan that allows all users access to both 4G LTE and 4G Broadband networks with a single service plan, at RM70 per month, where consumers will get 24GB of data (16GB of 4G LTE and 8GB of 4G Broadband) complete with a free Yes Altitude smartphone. There is simply no comparable offer from any other telco in Malaysia, said Lee.”

With the “Double Data” feature of YES 4G plans, whether consumers prefer to have more 4G LTE data for smartphones or more 4G Broadband data for tablets and laptops, the new YES LTE plans will cater to the full spectrum of user needs.

The YES Altitude is a full-fledged 4G VolTE smartphone for seamless mobile LTE connectivity. The phone sports a 5-inch HD IPS on-cell display and supports VoLTE for High Definition voice and video calls which are up to 3 times and 6 times better quality than calls made on 3G/2G networks. Its dual-sim functionality allows users the convenience and flexibility in managing their SIM cards for the best data and best voice call rates in the market. With a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of RM399 inclusive of 6% GST, is is the lowest priced VoLTE in Malaysia. The YES Altitude comes in 3 colour variants – gold, white and silver.

For YES “Double Data” plan sign-ups, consumers can visit any YES Store, YES Exclusive Retail Partner or authorised YES dealer across Malaysia. Alternatively, they can visit the YES Online Store at for more information.

Locally-Assembled BMW X5 Hybrid Makes Malaysian Debut

23 Jun

I have lost count of the number of times I was overtaken by surprise via hybrid cars, mostly BMWs previously while riding my bike. It didn’t occur to me then those were hybrids, other than remembering the vehicles were mostly the German carmaker’s brand where most of the owners driving the cars tend to be aggressive and fast, not only on the highways but also on lanes suburbs and rural areas. Of course, I have came across hybrids from Honda Insight and Toyota Prius but their drivers are more considerate.

Most of the time, I would be riding my bike on the middle lane close to the fast lane, and those BMW hybrids were mostly out-of-range from being visible on the rightside rearview mirror. Due to their near-silent operation, it left me wondering where and how did those cars manage to crept up and overtook me by surprise without making a noise? The only thing that prevented me from veering into their path last minute is because I could felt a bit of wind draft coming from behind me even though the car’s no longer in the mirror’s angle-of-view.

On the way to BMW Malaysia’s launch of the X5 Hybrid, did it dawn upon me the reason why I got caught by surprise most of the time by those BMWs is they are either hybrid or electric cars. Occasionally, I did return the favour to other motorists and bikers when riding new bikes on review due to the near-silence operation of the standard exhaust pipe’s note. Those original exhaust pipes give out noise level that almost similar to hybrid cars, for as long as the speed is anywhere between 40 and 145km/h.

The launch venue was dimly lit but it posed no issue to the EOS 80D DSLR I was using to capture the moments. I had the Speedlite 430EX III-RT with me but decided against using it, and set the camera to ISO 4,000 and shot whatever took place with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM kit lens.

At the launch venue, the motoring media was informed the new BMW X5 xDrive40e is assembled in Malaysia, and it is the 11th model to join the portfolio of locally-assembled vehicles at BMW Group Malaysia’s Assembly Facilities located at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park. Furthermore, the new BMW X5 xDrive40e leads in the next chapter of BMW EfficientyDynamics, by delivering exceptional performance as well as all-electric mobility with zero emissions and introduces a new form of commanding driving experience with a combination of pure electric and dynamic driving in a sports activity vehicle, according to Han Sang Yun, Managing Director and CEO of BMW Group Malaysia.

The most noticeable feature is the charging connection for the high-voltage battery located in the left front wing. Blue light effects appear here at the start of the charging process to indicate the flow of energy. The exhaust system on the new BMW X5 xDrive40e meanwhile, has a twin-tailpipe design with trapezoidal tips. Besides the model badge at the front of the vehicle’s flanks, the “eDrive” logo already familiar from the BMW i models graces the tailgate with their blue background colour as well as the centre console.

Further accentuating the dynamic character of the new BMW X5 xDrive40e is the M Sport Aerodynamic Package featured as a standard. In distinction to the Adaptive LED headlights, the new BMW X5 xDrive40e also features LED fog lights. Its body is dressed with BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminium satinised and is equipped with 19-inch M Double-spoke light alloy wheels with mixed tyres.

The intelligent hybrid powertrain control and permanent all-wheel drive together, makes for an utterly effortless performance and supreme efficiency out on the road. The new BMW X5 xDrive40e has a drive system comprising of a two-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a synchronous electric motor integrated in the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The new BMW X5 xDrive40e is also fitted with a 2.0-litre combustion engine, which has already won the coveted title of “International Engine of the Year” three times, and features a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and variable camshaft control on both intake and exhaust sides.

As the most powerful four-cylinder petrol unit in the BMW Group’s engine portfolio, the new SAV is powered with delightfully free-revving performance and highly refined characteristics. It generates a maximum output of 245 hp and 350 Nm of peak torque. The electric motor meanwhile, delivers an output of 83 kW with a maximum torque of 250 Nm, instantly available in typical electric drive fashion. This boosts the engine’s output for increased responsiveness with absolutely no delay when accelerating from stationary, as well as providing strong performance whenever a quick burst of speed is required.

Together, the new BMW X5 xDrive40e completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 6.8 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h and 450 Nm of peak torque. In all-electric mode meanwhile, the new SAV is able to travel at a top speed of 120 km/h. The exceptional dynamic acceleration of the new BMW X5 xDrive40e is accompanied with lesser fuel consumption of 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres and C02 emissions of just 77 grams per kilometre.

The vehicle set-up and powertrain control can be configured as desired with the Driving Experience Control switch and eDrive button. The latter, located on the centre console allows the driver of the new BMW X5 xDrive40e to rotate between the default AUTO eDrive setting, MAX eDrive setting, or the SAVE Battery setting. In the AUTO eDrive setting, both engine and electric motor works in tandem highly efficiently. The electric motor alone is used for setting off with normal power requirements, while the engine cuts in at around 70 km/h or when the driver wishes to accelerate very sharply.  In this mode, the intelligent operating strategy determines the most efficient drive combination at all times and switches to it automatically.

When switched to MAX eDrive, the driver will travel in all-electric mode, in which the vehicle is powered solely by the electric motor. This mode is designed for comfortable driving with zero local emissions without the engine being activated. It offers a maximum range of 30 km at a limited top speed of 120 km/h.  The third mode, SAVE Battery, allows the driver to save or build-up the high-voltage battery’s energy reserved for a later point in time. When driving on the road for instance, the state of charge can be kept constant or even boosted in order to use the high-voltage battery’s power for all-electric driving in urban areas later in the journey. This way, the stored energy can be selectively deployed exactly when required.

Additionally, the new BMW X5 xDrive40e also comes as standard with a Driving Experience Control switch which activates the vehicle set-up modes COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO. Each has an effect of altering the throttle mapping, the steering characteristics, the responses of the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, and the characteristics of Adaptive M suspension with it’s sport suspension setting, specifically tuned Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension equipped as standard on the new SAV.

The modes selectable with the eDrive button and the Driving Experience Control switch can be combined with one another at will, allowing the powertrain control and vehicle set-up to be tailored precisely to the prevailing situation and the driver’s personal preferences. This consequently allows for further comfort, sportiness and efficiency to be combined with high-intensity hybrid driving as desired.

Under the umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC, customers are offered the ChargeNow service, comprising of a ChargeNow card that grants straightforward access to partner charging stations, ChargEV, offered through BMW Group Malaysia’s partnership with Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia). The ChargEV stations are already operational in 19 strategic locations throughout Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kedah, Melaka, and Johor.

The new BMW X5 xDrive40e is available in the exterior colours of Glacier Silver, Mineral White, Space Grey and Carbon Black with upholstery choices of Leather Dakota Terra or Leather Dakota Black.

The retail price (on the road, without insurance, with BMW Group Malaysia’s latest 5 Years Unlimited Mileage Warranty, Free Scheduled Service Program and BMW Tyre Warranty Programme) is:

The New BMW X5 xDrive40e – RM 582,800.00

Government Approved Hybrid Incentive
Retail price without insurance – RM 388,800.00

Boon Siew Honda launches RS150R cub motorcycle

13 Jun

RS150R-3Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa are Honda Racing Corporation’s (HRC) factory riders in the annual MotoGP event, which is the premier class of motorcycling sport. The performance of the riders in MotoGP will no doubt inspire Honda fans around the world to emulate the success of the duo. While Honda motorcycling fans around the world can choose from models such as the CBR500R, CBR650F and CBR600RR as the entry point to realise their dream of participating in national championship, those in South East Asia, particularly Malaysia, will have to choose the cub-series models for the popular Cub Prix Championship.

The hottest class in the Cub Prix Championship is the 130cc, which will be upgraded to 150cc by next season (2017). In the preparation for this, Honda has ensure riders using its brand will have a new weapon to compete, with the introduction of the new RS150R cub motorcycle, commonly known as moped or kapchai in Malaysia. The new RS150R is a 6-speed, liquid-cooled single cylinder DOHC 149.16cc kapchai that is designed not only to win the Cub Prix Championship but also to inspire Honda fans in this region to own a motorcycle that lives up to Big Red’s reputation in the motorcycling sport category.

Unlike bigger capacity bikes which are costly for the young and inspiring motorcycling enthusiasts, the new Honda RS150R starts from RM8,213.94 to RM8,372.94 (both w/GST), and the Malaysian distributor, Boon Siew Honda, is targetting to sell 24,000 units in the next 12 months. The new RS150R is also the company’s first ever sporty kapchai model in the premium category. Malaysia is the third country in the ASEAN Oceania market to launch this long awaited kapchai model after Indonesia and Vietnam.

According to Shinji Aoyama, who is also the Honda Motor Operating Officer and Director Chief Operating Officer for Motorcycle Operations, the company aims at achieving sales of 20 million units of motorcycles for 2016 and expects to expand its world market share from 33% to 35%. For 2015, Honda had sold 17 million units worldwide, which is about 3 times more than its nearest competitor, which is ranked #2 (believed to be Yamaha) in the world.

In its quest to continually to reach out to a bigger demographic, Boon Siew Honda’s plans in the pipeline is to beef up its big bikes segment in the country as well, which has not been aggressively promoted locally. It will do this by strengthening the sales network and by providing the big bike customers with multitude of choice for its line-up, hinting that Malaysian big bikers will soon be able to buy official imports of CBU models from Japan locally.

From its single cylinder, 149.16cc DOHC liquid-cooled engine, the new RS150R offers a power output of 15.6 hp at 9,000 rpm while torque is rated at 13.5Nm at 6.500 rpm. It weights in at only 122 kg, features a 4.5-litre fuel tank capacity as well as disc brakes for the front and rear. The RS150R is offered in 2 variants and four colours ranging from Metallic Red, Repsol and in Matte Blue or Matte Black. Both variants will be available at all authorised Honda dealerships by the beginning of August 2016.
