ASUS announces Eee Pad Slider

31 Jul

ASUS has launched the ASUS Eee Pad Slider, a tablet that builds on the great success of the Eee Pad Transformer. Prior to its launch, the Eee Pad Slider has already made its mark with its winning design at the International Design Excellence Awards 2011. The Eee Pad Slider, which comes in metallic brown, features a slide-out keyboard, the new Google Android 3.1 operating system (Android 3.2 upgradable*), as well as a plethora of powerful multimedia features. In pad mode, users can experience rich visuals on the 178° wide viewing angle IPS display.

Connectivity is a breeze too, with the built-in USB port, Micro SD card reader, and mini-HDMI port. In slide-out mode, users can take advantage of the keyboard to compose emails and blog posts faster than ever.

Superior multimedia experience

Powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual coreprocessor, the ASUS Eee Pad Slider is blazing fast whether browsing the web, watching HD movies, listening to music, or doing all of the above at once. HD video playback and surround sound system are supported, so users can easily view media from their Eee Pad Slider on their home entertainment system.

The brilliant IPS display panel, with an ultra-wide 178° viewing angle and 16:10 golden ratio, not only provides an unrivaled experience, but is also protected by a layer of scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass. With 10 finger multi-touch support, users can have the most natural and intuitive touch experience possible. On top of that, the front-facing 1.2MP camera and back-facing 5MP camera gives users video conferencing capabilities as well as the ability to take stunning pictures.

Ultra-mobile productivity

The slide-out keyboard that is built right into the ASUS Eee Pad Slider gives users a faster and more comfortable typing experience compared to an on-screen keyboard. Now users can be productive anytime and anywhere. The pre-installed Polaris® Office 3.0 gives users a professional Mobile Office Solution, allowing them to view and edit office documents including documents, spreadsheets and presentation files.

To help users seamlessly transfer data between devices, ASUS WebStorage provides one year of unlimited cloud storage so users can backup and share all of their favorite songs, movies, and photos. With the addition of the 16/32GB eMMC slot, USB port, Micro SD card reader, and mini-HDMI port, the Eee Pad Slider is truly a productivity and entertainment powerhouse.

Trendsetting cloud experience

With Google’s revolutionary Android 3.1 operating system (Android 3.2 upgradable*), designed and optimized for tablets, users will receive the full web experience on the Eee Pad Slider. Adobe Flash** is enabled, which means rich and immersive content is right at users’ finger tips.

ASUS also included several ASUS propriety applications such as MyNet, MyCloud, and MyLibrary. MyNet easily streams digital media wirelessly to home network devices, so HD videos or music can be played on HDTVs or desktop PCs. MyLibrary consolidates downloaded books, magazines, and newspapers in one easy-to-browse profile, while MyCloud is a total  cloud solution that provides access to digital content such as music, videos and photos. Users can even use MyCloud to remotely access and control their PC or Mac systems and access applications to extend the capabilities of the Eee Pad Slider.

Finally, the Google Android Market offers hundreds of thousands of apps for users’ enjoyment, including popular ones such as Angry Birds, Facebook, and Twitter.

*Android Honeycomb 3.2 upgrade will be available through FOTA.

**Users may need to download Adobe Flash from the Android Market.

MiMedia Partners with Digital Memories

30 Jul

As digital media collections become increasingly important to consumers, the digitization of old photos is as critical as ever. However once photos are digitized and on a computer, what’s to stop them from disappearing with a stolen laptop or during a hard drive crash? Teaming online backup and access with top-of-the-line photo scanning, MiMedia and Digital Memories are taking photo collections from analog to digital to the cloud, where they are perpetually accessible.

“Even as digital media collections continue to grow exponentially, the average person still has albums, piles of old photos, fading slides, negatives, and shoeboxes of memories that can be destroyed in any number of ways,” said Erik Zamkoff, CEO, MiMedia. “MiMedia has partnered with a trusted digitization service in Digital Memories to make photo archiving a painless process that will keep generations-worth of memories safe and secure.”

Beginning today, customers who enlist Digital Memories to scan photos will have the option to automatically pre-populate a MiMedia account.  MiMedia offers 7GB of free storage space to any and all consumers, and Digital Memories customers with media collections larger than 7GB will still receive three-months of MiMedia for free, with a discount on conversion.

MiMedia offers consumers secure storage and universal access to all of their files, including music, pictures and video. While other back-up services offer limited access and sharing portals lack security, MiMedia addresses both of these needs. The company leverages geo-redundant back-up, a web-based interface for in-browser access, sharing capabilities and a patent-pending Shuttle Drive—a plug and play USB hard drive that drastically reduces the initial upload time. MiMedia also presents user photos, videos, and music in an easy-to-navigate and attractive interface.

Founded in 2002 by two brothers in Ohio, Digital Memories is a family-owned digitalization service focused on the consumer market, but with the capabilities to handle professional photo collections. The company handles orders nationwide via FedEx Express shipping.

“We’re thrilled about the ability to take the family history from the dusty attic, or shoebox, all the way to the cloud,” said Robert Blau, Founder, Digital Memories. “Both MiMedia and Digital Memories realize that digital media is becoming increasingly important to consumers. We make sure consumers can enjoy their photos in a digital format, while MiMedia keeps these photos alive in the cloud forever and makes them readily accessible from anywhere.”

About MiMedia
MiMedia brings consumers a totally new approach to online backup—a way to protect, access, enjoy and share their digital lives all in one place. MiMedia will back up and protect personal files in a secure online storage account. Beyond online backup, MiMedia also provides instant on demand access to files from anywhere. The company is privately held and based just outside of New York. For more information, please visit the company’s Web site at

Microsoft Adds Raw Support to Explorer in Windows 7 & Vista

28 Jul

Microsoft has released a new Camera Codec Pack that allows Windows 7 and Vista users to view digital camera RAW files as thumbnails natively in Windows Explorer, and edit copies of them with Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011. The author, Brad Weed, notes that “dealing with raw images on Windows hasn’t always been easy” but says that the update will likely make raw shooters’ lives “a little easier”. The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack only supports a selection of some 108 raw-capable cameras, excluding a whole range of recent (and not-so recent) models. This may of course change in the future, albeit there is no information on when or if the list of supported models expanded. By clicking through / scrolling down, you can view a short video detailing the benefits of the update.

Printing Flexibility

An incentive for those who have registered with the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service or Picasa Web Albums is PIXMA Cloud Link, which provides the ability to print, directly through the PIXMA MG5320 printer without the use of a computer, photos from photo albums stored in those services3. Users of PIXMA Cloud Link will also have access to exclusive templates including stationary, envelopes, memos, calendars and many others.  In addition, the PIXMA MG5320 printer is 802.11n Wi-Fi certified allowing for a fast network transfer rate. Wireless networks can be set up with the press of one button when using a Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).

The Canon EPP mobile app, for use with compatible Android and Apple smartphones and tablets, will be upgraded in August to have documents scanned on the printer to then be sent directly to a compatible device.  Users can also print pdfs of documents that were created with the App directly from compatible devices whereas in the past only photos were able to be printed.

Creative Personalization

Since its inception, the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX software has provided users with an easy way to get the most out of prints by creating albums, calendars and stickers from almost any image.  Now with the latest version, users can bring creativity to a whole new level with the addition of Fun Filter Effects similar to scene modes found on the latest Canon PowerShot Digital Cameras.  Images can be customized with Fish-Eye, Miniature and Toy Camera effects to make them even more memorable while being a conversation piece at the same time.  In addition, there is an option to change the focus of the image to have it appear softer and the ability to blur specific aspects of the background, an effect previously only captured with a SLR.  Adding to the versatility of these Canon PIXMA printers is the ability to print directly on to CDs, DVDs, and Blue-rays allowing users to personalize media in a creative way while creating fun photo projects at the same time.

Full HD Movie Print, which is available on both new PIXMA printers, has been enhanced to produce clearer images of frames from videos captured on compatible HD Canon EOS and PowerShot Digital Cameras.  This technology allows users to tell the story of a video captured in the park or at a memorable event frame by frame in a more unique way than before.  One new aspect is the ability to merge multiple images into one final shot so users will be able to capture nearly every portion of a golfer’s swing or a baby’s first steps.  In addition, a new layout feature allows printing up to 72 individual images on one sheet of paper.

PIXMA MG5320 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer

For the consumer interested in a high-quality multifunction printer which is easy to use and affordable, the Canon PIXMA MG5320 Wireless Photo All-In-One Printer should be at the top of the list.  This printer features five individual ink tanks which is part of the ChromaLife100 + ink system4 and help to produce a 4” x 6” borderless photo in approximately 20 seconds 5.  In addition the printer has a maximum color resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi6.  This new PIXMA office machine will deliver output at approximately 12.5 ipm for black-and-white documents6 and approximately 9.3 ipm for color7.  The Advanced Media Handling options such as Auto Duplex printing which helps conserve your paper supply and a two-way paper feed that can help reduce the amount of time it takes to complete a project.  The LCD has been repositioned toward the middle of the printer helping to streamline the navigation process and achieving a more sleek and stylish design.  The size of the LCD screen has also been increased to 3.0-inches for easy viewing and navigation through menus.
