Repsol Honda Team Dominates in Assen

The legendary Assen circuit was the setting of another brilliant performance by the Repsol Honda Team. The 90,248 spectators occupying the grandstands at the ‘Cathedral’ enjoyed a two-man battle between Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa, who led from start to finish, with no rivals to challenge them.

Stoner celebrated his sixth consecutive podium in Assen with another victory, his third of the season, and Pedrosa crossed the line behind him to complete the team’s fifth double podium of the 2012 MotoGP World Championship. This result, combined with Jorge Lorenzo’s unfortunate crash, places Stoner in the joint championship lead with 140 points and Pedrosa, 19 points behind them consolidating third position.

Casey Stoner

“To take pole position and now the win is really incredible, a big thanks to my whole team who never gave up. My plan was to get a better start than I actually did, take some advantage and use the energy I had to try and make a gap and try to hold on to the end. We also knew that whichever position we were in, we had to preserve the rear tyre. With a few laps remaining, I knew we wouldn’t suffer a big drop in tyre performance, I still felt good so I decided to pass him and see if I could pull a gap. It was a tough race, I had a lot of arm pump as I had to compensate for my injuries from the crash yesterday, but my fitness was good and the bike was working well in general. I’m sorry for Jorge, nobody wants to take points over a competitor in this manner, but as we can see, one race can change everything.”

Dani Pedrosa

“Looking at the lap times we did during the weekend, I knew I had better rhythm than Casey, so I made a good start and tried to pull away from the first laps. Casey stayed behind me all the time and by the second half of the race, I believe he took profit of extra energy he saved during the first part of the race to overtake me. Our pace was very good in the race, the bike worked very well but maybe I just chose the wrong strategy this time. I hope to do a better strategy next week in Germany.”

Stoner Wins Dutch TT MotoGP at Assen

Photos: Dorna Communications

Repsol Honda Team’s Casey Stoner took victory at an incident-packed Iveco TT Assen on Saturday as he held off the challenge from Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso.

The race started with high drama as San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Álvaro Bautista took out Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo in the first corner, putting an end to both their challenges. Lorenzo was clearly upset about the incident, which has been put under investigation by Race Direction. After this, the Repsol Honda Team pair of Dani Pedrosa and Stoner were left to lead the race at the start, with Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies in pursuit.

Two laps in it was heartbreak for LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl as he crashed out of fourth, making this the first race he has not finished in his rookie season. In the meantime, Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden had run into the gravel in the last corner, but managed to wrestle his bike back on track.

As the Hondas started to pull out a small margin, the crashes continued at the back as Avintia Blusens’ Yonny Hernandez ended his race in the gravel. With 19 laps to go Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Andrea Dovizioso went past Spies into third as the pair diced for the final podium position. Dovizioso’s teammate Cal Crutchlow, who was ninth after taking avoiding action at the start was having a tricky time trying to pass the Ducatis of Hayden, Valentino Rossi and Pramac Racing Team’s Héctor Barberá.

On the same lap, NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Colin Edwards retired with mechanical issues. With 14 laps to go, Crutchlow had passed Barberá into seventh in the group fighting it out for fifth, while Spies had made a move on Dovizioso back into third. A few laps later Crutchlow’s charge continued as he passed Rossi into sixth to hunt down Hayden, who he also passed some laps later.

Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaró retired from the race with 11 laps remaining, putting a dent in his top CRT hopes. This was followed up a lap later with Rossi entering the pits with a chunk missing from his rear tyre, which was changed before he re-entered the race. Meanwhile at the front Stoner made his move on Pedrosa as the Spaniard looked to be struggling.

With six laps remaining both Hondas looked to be slowing, yet had pulled out a seven second lead over Spies, who was lapping a second a lap quicker. Further back, Barberá saved a near crash as he diced with Hayden for sixth. Three laps before the end Dovizioso had caught up to Spies once more as the pair was involved in yet another tussle for the final podium spot. The Italian made his move going into turn 1 on the final lap, and held on until the line.

In the end it was Stoner who took the chequered flag to go equal on points at the top of the championship  with Lorenzo, as Pedrosa finished second and Dovizioso took yet another podium this year. They were followed by Spies, Crutchlow, Hayden, and Barberá, whilst the CRT contingent benefited from the numerous crashes, with Espargaró’s teammate De Puniet taking eighth, in front of San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Michele Pirro and Speed Master’s Mattia Pasini. Rossi finished in 13th, 0.002 seconds ahead of Paul Bird Motorsport’s James Ellison. Cardion AB Racing’s Karel Abraham did not start the race, as his hand injury proved too severe to race.

Stoner Snatches Pole Position In Qualifying For Dutch TT

29 Jun

Photo: Dorna Communications

In a dramatic qualifying session that was interrupted by spells of rain at the Iveco TT Assen it was Repsol Honda Team’s Casey Stoner who snatched a last-grasp pole position for tomorrow’s race ahead of teammate Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo.

After numerous breaks due to showers, the sun reappeared in the final few minutes to allow Stoner, who crashed heavily in the morning practice, to put in a scorching lap in the high 1.33’s to oust Pedrosa into second on the grid. Rounding out the front row is Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo, who could not match the Hondas’ pace, and seemed to be struggling with the last sector of the track.

The story of the afternoon was however LCR Honda MotoGP’s rookie Stefan Bradl, who heads the second row in fourth, after putting in his best qualifying display in the premier-class. Alongside him in fifth is Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow, who again seems to be not feeling the effects of his fractured left ankle. Sixth place is occupied by yesterday’s pace-setter Ben Spies on board his factory Yamaha, who will be looking to rediscover some of his earlier form for the race tomorrow.

Crutchlow’s teammate Andrea Dovizioso leads the third row in seventh as the last Yamaha on the grid, after failing to improve in the final few minutes of the session. To his right, San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Álvaro Bautista starts in eighth, after he crashed out on his satellite Honda on the final hot lap.

Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden qualified in ninth, in front of teammate Valentino Rossi, rounding out a disappointing qualifying session for the Italian outfit. Top CRT performer was Power Electronics Aspar’s Randy de Puniet, who put his ART machine in 12th place.

Canon EOS 7D Firmware V2

28 Jun

Canon Press Release

Enhanced with you in mind – Canon adds a range of new features to the EOS 7D

London, UK, 28 June 2012 – Canon today enhances the EOS 7D with firmware v2, adding a range of new features for enthusiasts looking to push the limits of their photography. Building on the camera’s high speed, advanced handling and creative versatility, the new firmware provides photographers with a host of new benefits including higher maximum RAW burst rate, in-camera editing functions, user-definable Auto ISO and support for Canon’s latest GPS Receiver, GP-E2.

Originally launched in 2009, the EOS 7D was carefully developed based on the feedback from thousands of photographers from across the globe. Offering the perfect combination of outstanding image quality and exceptional versatility across a range of photography styles, even today it is still considered to be one of the best APS-C cameras on the market. When developing the new firmware Canon followed a similar approach, gaining direct user feedback to bring the EOS 7D up to date with enhanced performance and a greater range of shooting capabilities and creative functionality.

Enhanced RAW performance With an 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Dual “DIGIC 4” processors and an extended maximum ISO of 12,800, the EOS 7D offers fast, high-quality shooting at speeds of up to 8 frames per second. Thanks to the new firmware which adds powerful memory management algorithms taken from Canon’s flagship EOS-1 series, photographers will now be able to enjoy greater flexibility in continuous shooting, with the maximum RAW buffer now extended to a new high of 25 RAW files or 130 JPEGs. Combining with the camera’s high 18MP resolution and 14-bit image processing, this will allow photographers to capture the decisive moment with rich detailed images.

In-camera image editing and rating A range of newly-added editing functions also gives photographers more control over how images look, allowing post-production to begin in-camera. Photographers can now process their RAW files and correct artefacts such as peripheral illumination, distortion and chromatic aberration. Additionally, adjustments to white balance, sharpness and Picture Style, as well as a host of other parameters, can now also be made immediately after shooting, with the results saved as new JPEG files. JPEGs can also be instantly resized, without the need for a PC or Mac.

Photographers can now easily filter large volumes of pictures on their way back from a shoot using an image rating facility. Image rating data is stored in each file’s metadata, which can be read by a range of editing applications, including Canon Digital Photo Professional, and other industry software such as Apple Aperture, Adobe Lightroom and Bridge.

Extra control in stills and movies The EOS 7D’s new firmware provides extended versatility across both stills and movies. Newly-added control of Auto ISO enables photographers to limit the maximum ISO speed to any point within the native ISO 400-6,400 range. Offering greater control over exposure, this will enable photographers to customise the maximum automatic ISO speed to suit their personal preferences, or to adjust parameters in different situations to meet specific creative goals.

Improved audio functionality in movie mode also provides aspiring videographers with greater control while shooting videos. Users can complement the camera’s Full HD (1920x1080p) movie footage with 16-bit digital stereo sound, sampled at broadcast-quality 48KHz, and new manual control of audio levels allows users to choose from 64 sound levels. A digital wind-cut filter also reduces noise made by movement of air around the microphone, ensuring sound is clear and free from peripheral interference.

Track your travels with GPS compatibility Firmware v2 also provides added capacity for users to track the location of their images with new support for the GPS Receiver GP-E2 – Canon’s latest high-performance GPS unit. The GP-E2 is attached securely to the hotshoe, and connected to the camera via a cable, making it easy for EOS 7D photographers to geo-tag photos with longitude, latitude and altitude data as well as the direction in which the shot was taken – adding the information to the EXIF file of the image¹. A GPS Logger tracks movements by downloading GPS data at regular intervals, and compatibility with Google Maps means users can easily view their route in Canon’s free Map Utility software.

Firmware v2 will roll out across the region from August 2012.

Canon EOS 7D firmware v2 – new features:     • Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)     • In-camera RAW image editing     • In-camera Image Rating     • In-camera JPEG resizing     • Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)     • Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording     • GPS compatibility     • File name customisation     • Time zone settings     • Faster scrolling of magnified images     • Quick control screen during playback

Canon EOS 7D – Key features:     • 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor     • Up to 8fps shooting     • ISO range up to 12800     • Approx. 100% Viewfinder     • 19 cross-type AF points     • iFCL metering system     • Dual “DIGIC 4” processing     • Full HD movie recording     • Integrated Speedlite Transmitter     • 3” Clear View II LCD     • Magnesium alloy body with environmental protection

¹ Note: GPS information can only be appended to still images.

Marvel’s The Avengers To Gross US$600 Million

27 Jun

The Avengers will become the third movie ever to earn over US$600 million at the domestic box office sometime today in the US and Canada markets. It is reaching that milestone on its 54th day in theaters, which is a week longer than it took Avatar (47 days). Including its foreign gross, the movie’s worldwide total now sits at an incredible US$1.44 billion.

The Avengers started its remarkable box office run with a record-shattering US$207.4 million opening weekend. In a somewhat surprising turn of events, the movie’s appeal reached well beyond the fanboy crowd, and it has held incredibly well in its eight weeks in theaters. Its debut currently accounts for 34.6 percent of its gross, which is a lower share than predecessors The Incredible Hulk (41.1 percent), Iron Man 2 (41 percent), Captain America: The First Avenger (36.8 percent) and Thor (36.3 percent).

Marvel’s The Avengers, from its opening weekend in North America since May 4th, has been shattering domestic box office records ever since, including the industry’s all-time second weekend record with US$103 million; fastest film to reach US$200 million (3 days), US$300 million (9 days), US$400 million (14 days), and US$500 million (23 days); and highest Saturday (US$69.5 million) and Sunday (US$57 million) totals. It is the #4 film of all time internationally with $838.9 million.

Among only 12 films that have grossed US$1 billion at the global box office, Marvel’s The Avengers is one of five billion-dollar Disney releases, which also include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Disney•Pixar’s Toy Story 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

It currently accounts for over 32 percent of the total grosses for Summer 2012, and it has earned more than the next four movies combined (MIB 3, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus). The Avengers continues to earn plenty of money, and this past weekend it eased 19 percent to $7.2 million. Based on its trajectory, it could wind up as high as US$630 million, though that assumes its able to continue generating interest after The Amazing Spider-Man opens next Thursday.

By today, The Avengers will pass the original run of Titanic (US$600.8 million), though it won’t eclipse Titanic‘s combined US$658.7 million (including April’s 3D re-release) unless it gets a major re-release at some point.
