Olympus Stylus XZ-10

30 Jan

For photography enthusiasts looking for a high-end compact that delivers outstanding images even in low light, the game-changing STYLUS XZ range stands out from the rest. And now Olympus has made the range even stronger, with the addition of the slender STYLUS XZ-10. By XZ standards, the XZ-10 is extremely compact and light. But it is also extremely well equipped and boasts many of the features that make the flagship STYLUS XZ-2 such a remarkable camera. It has a super-bright 1:1.8-stop zoom lens, pro-style manual settings, ISO 6400, a 12-Megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and the powerful TruePic VI image processor used in Olympus OM-D cameras. The lens gives you 26mm* wide-angle flexibility, a 5x optical zoom and excellent 1:2.7-aperture brightness even at maximum zoom. The XZ-10 also boasts a host of clever feature upgrades. For example, 120fps high-speed HD movie recording. Or Photo story, which lets you shoot a group of still photos with Art Filters straight into attractive, pre-prepared layouts that are ready for sharing without the need for more work on a computer. The XZ-10 offers an ideal combination of optical brilliance, pocket-sized design and the usability required to shoot and share every day on the fly. It will be available from late March 2013 for just £349, in black, brown or white.

A perfect 10 For people who like to carry their camera with them all the time, the STYLUS XZ-10 is the perfect high-end compact. It’s about 40% smaller by volume** than the classic STYLUS XZ-2, but still offers all the advantages of a super-bright, large-aperture i.ZUIKO DIGITAL 1:1.8-2.7 wide zoom lens that retains its brightness right across the zoom range. The XZ-10 delivers light-rich, 1.8 f-stop performance at a 26mm* wide angle and 1:2.7 at maximum 5x zoom. Together with ISO 6400 plus Olympus’ advanced iHS image processing and CMOS sensor technologies, this superb lens gives you new creative potential by expanding the range of shots you can take. From 1-cm macros to expansive landscapes and expressive portraits to inspirational mixed-light scenes, you can be confident of getting just the effect you have in mind. You can defocus the background to generate professional-looking bokeh. Or shoot blur-free images in difficult light without a tripod – by selecting a short exposure time and Handheld Starlight Mode with Flash. Even at high ISO settings, iHS technologies deliver low noise and radiant colours with crisp details and rich gradation in both dark and light parts of your shot.

1 ring, 1 wheel, 4 manual modes Unlike most compacts, the XZ-10 lets you work your settings like a pro. Just like the STYLUS flagship XZ-2, it has a customisable control ring around the lens for adjusting key parameters manually, without taking your eye off your subject. Aperture, exposure time and program shift are some of the settings available via the control ring. Alternatively, for fast access to ISO or metering, you can assign these to the Fn button on the back of the camera to ensure quick, easy handling on the go.

3 inches, 1 touch On top of the manual settings, an array of practical features makes the XZ-10 one of the most intuitive high-end all-rounders to use. If you prefer to let electronics do more of the work, you might start with the 3-inch, quick-response touch-sensitive LCD. With one tap of your finger, it can focus on fast-moving subjects and trigger your shot. Alternatively, simply switch on Live Guide or enhanced i-Auto. Transferring stills and 1080p Full HD movies is just as intuitive. The XZ-10 is FlashAir™-compatible so you can connect to your cloud or a social network website using your familiar smartphone interface and an optional FlashAir card.

Colour No.2 for the XZ-2 From February 2013, the STYLUS flagship XZ-2 will be available for the first time in white (as well as black), for €549.99. Professionals and ambitious hobby photographers appreciate the XZ-2 for its outstanding image quality that stems in part from its large 1/1.7” backlit CMOS sensor. It’s also popular for its full range of customisable manual controls and accessories, which are reminiscent of a system camera. The LCD on the XZ-2 is tiltable to help with shooting low down or above head height and it goes one better than the new XZ-10 with a digital/analogue customisable hybrid control ring. Like a system camera, the XZ-2 has an accessory port and is compatible with a wide range of dedicated add-ons that includes an external flash, electronic viewfinder, automatic lens cap, body jacket and a dedicated underwater housing.

Apple Unveils 128GB iPad 4

29 Jan

Apple has today announced a 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad with Retina display. The 128GB iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models provide twice the storage capacity of the 64GB models to hold even more valuable content including photos, documents, projects, presentations, books, movies, TV shows, music and apps.

“With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.”

iPad continues to have a significant impact on business with virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 currently deploying or testing iPad. Companies regularly utilising large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad. The over 10 million iWork users, and customers who rely on other incredible apps like Global Apptitude for analysing team film and creating digital playbooks, Auria for an incredible 48 track recording system, or AutoCAD for drafting architectural and engineering drawings, also benefit greatly from having the choice of an iPad with more storage capacity.

“Our AutoCAD WS app for iOS was designed to give customers seamless access to their designs anywhere, anytime,” said Amy Bunszel, vice president of AutoCAD products for Autodesk. “These files are often large and highly detailed so having the thin and light iPad with its Multitouch display, integrated camera and all-day battery life, is a real advantage for iPad users to view, edit and share their AutoCAD data.”

“The features and capabilities of iPad give us the ability to set a new standard for multitrack recording and editing on a mobile device,” said Rim Buntinas, WaveMachine Labs’ CEO. “Users of the Auria app can play 48 mono or stereo 24bit/96 kHz tracks simultaneously, record up to 24 of those tracks simultaneously, and also edit and mix with familiar tools. With its portability and all-day battery life, iPad has revolutionised recording for audio professionals allowing artists to record anywhere.”

“The bottom line for our customers is winning football games, and iPad running our GamePlan solution unquestionably helps players be as prepared as possible,” said Randall Fusee, Global Apptitude Co-Founder. “The iPad’s unbeatable combination of security, being thin and light, having an incredible Retina display and also being powerful enough to handle large amounts of data enables us to deliver a product that takes film study to a new level and ultimately gives our users the best opportunity to prepare, execute and win.”

The fourth generation iPad features a gorgeous 9.7-inch Retina display, Apple-designed A6X chip, FaceTime HD camera, iOS 6.1 and ultrafast wireless performance**. iOS 6.1 includes support for additional LTE networks around the world***, and iTunes Match subscribers can download individual songs to their iOS devices from iCloud.

iPad runs over 800,000 apps available on the App Store, including more than 300,000 apps designed specifically for iPad, from a wide range of categories including books, games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. iPad also supports the more than 5,000 newspapers and magazines offered in Newsstand, and the more than 1.5 million books available on the iBookstore.

Pricing & Availability The new 128GB versions of the fourth generation iPad will be available starting Tuesday, February 5, in black or white, for a suggested retail price of £639 inc VAT (£532.50 ex VAT) for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and £739 inc VAT (£615.83 ex VAT) for the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model. All versions of the 128GB iPad will be sold through the Apple Online Store (http://www.apple.com/uk), Apple retail stores and select Apple Authorised Resellers.

Nikon Announces New AF-S Lenses for CP+ 2013 Show

29 Jan

For Japan’s CP+ 2013 Show in Yokohama, Nikon Corporation has announced 2 new lenses to join its line-up; the AF-S version of its 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 lens and the AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR.

This ultrawide-to-wide zoom lens can be used on the company’s FX-format dSLRs as well as its more recent film SLRs. With up to a 100º angle of view, the AF-S Nikkor 18–35mm f/3.5–4.5G ED offers advanced and amateur photographers an affordable way to experiment with the unique perspectives that wide-angle zoom lenses can achieve, the company says. The newly designed optical formula comprises a dozen elements in eight groups, including two ED glass and three aspherical elements and Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating. The minimum focus distance is 28cm (measured from the film/sensor plane rather than the front lens element). The AF-S Nikkor 18–35mm f/3.5–4.5G ED lens weighs in at 385 grams, and takes standard 77mm filters. On a DX body – or an FX camera operating in DX crop mode -, the lens offers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 27-53mm.

The new AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens, whose development was announced in the summer of 2012. This lens has already been tested by professional sports photographers at the London Olympics, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is a super-telephoto lens featuring twenty elements in thirteen groups – including two ED and two fluorite elements -, an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades and electromagnetic diaphragm control (hence the new “E” designation), and Nikon’s critically acclaimed Vibration Reduction system. Every Nikon AF-S Nikkor 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens is supplied with the also-new TC-800-1.25E ED teleconverter – the first teleconverter to employ an ED glass element to correct chromatic aberration.

Canon Announces Powershot A2500 / Ixus 255 / Ixus 135 / Ixus 132

29 Jan

Canon has announced a new range of models to its renowned IXUS line-up; with three high-zoom IXUS cameras and a new PowerShot model. The high-performance IXUS 255 HS and slimline IXUS 135 and IXUS 132 combine distinctive design with Canon’s acclaimed imaging and lens technologies, offering stunning results and slim, stylish metal bodies. The new entry-level PowerShot A2500 provides point-and-shoot ease in a modern, compact and affordable design that can be taken anywhere and used by every member of the family.

Designed to make it easier for users to share their images or video clips with friends, family and followers, the IXUS 255 HS and IXUS 135 are the latest additions to Canon’s expanding range of Wi-Fi enabled cameras. Easy connectivity to smartphones and tablets allows uploading to popular social networks, whilst GPS via mobile functionality means users can track their nights out and holidays by tagging location data.

Powerful imaging throughout the range

From entry-level through to advanced models, Canon’s entire compact camera range is designed to make it easy to capture high quality images and video that users will want to share. The 16 Megapixel sensors of the IXUS 135, IXUS 132 and PowerShot A2500 combine with Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor to produce poster-size images with minimal noise and natural colours – perfect for family events, holidays or simply capturing the everyday. The IXUS 255 HS features Canon’s advanced HS System, with a 12.1MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 processor, which allow this model to excel in low-light situations, capturing sunsets, evening events or nights out with friends easily, with a reduced need for the flash.

Canon’s extensive heritage in optical engineering is central to the superior performance and compactness of these new models. The ultra wide-angle 24mm, 10x optical zoom of the IXUS 255 HS allows users to get even closer to the action and capture every detail, and both the IXUS 135 and IXUS 132 pack a 28mm, 8x optical zoom into a super-slim body that can easily slip into a pocket. Advanced optical Image Stabilizer technology with Intelligent IS selects from seven[1] different modes to combat camera shake and ensure video is smooth and stills are crisp – even in challenging shooting conditions. Each new model also features ZoomPlus technology, a high quality digital zoom that up to doubles the reach of the lens while maintaining image detail.

Express your creativity

All four new cameras have been designed to make it easier than ever to shoot high-quality, creative images and HD video footage. The new entry-level IXUS and PowerShot models feature Smart Auto, which detects up to 32 different scenes and applies the most appropriate settings to capture the perfect shot. Creative modes like Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Fish-eye Effect and Monochrome can also be used to enhance an image, add drama, or give it a unique, fun perspective.

The IXUS 255 HS also features a new Hybrid Auto mode, which provides a fresh way to capture high-quality stills and HD movies with minimum effort. Hybrid Auto uses Smart Auto with Scene Detection technology for shooting stills with optimal settings, and also captures up to four seconds of movie footage prior to the shutter being released. All movie clips captured during the day are then merged into one behind-the-scenes movie, which can be shared online to give friends a unique insight into any collection of photos.

Power to share: anytime, anywhere

The IXUS 255 HS and IXUS 135 make it easy to share images with friends and family via social networks, smartphones and tablets. Using Wi-Fi[2] connectivity, the cameras can be wirelessly connected to smartphones or tablets, and images can be instantly uploaded to Facebook, Twitter or YouTube via Canon’s CameraWindow app. With GPS via mobile functionality, users can add the GPS location data logged with their smartphone to their photos, so they can track where each shot was taken.

Free access to CANON iMAGE GATEWAY also allows users to share image albums, or back up photos and movies directly from the camera over their home Wi-Fi network. Images can also be transferred to a range of home devices, including PCs, or compatible wireless printers.

Stylishly designed, perfectly compact

The new IXUS models feature stylish, metal bodies – with compact, sophisticated designs that slip into any pocket or handbag. The IXUS 135, IXUS 132 and PowerShot A2500 feature large 6.7cm (2.7”) screens, while the IXUS 255 HS features a high quality 7.5 cm (3.0”) PureColor II G LCD screen with a 460k dot resolution – ideal for framing and reviewing shots in crisp detail and vivid colour, even from awkward angles or in bright sunlight.

All four models feature a new Eco mode, which helps users continue shooting for longer by conserving battery life, capturing up to 30% more photos – perfect for family days out, or holiday use.

Nikon Celebrates 80th Anniversary of Nikkor Brand

25 Jan

In commemoration of NIKKOR’s 80th anniversary, Nikon hopes to strengthen and increase awareness of the historic and reliable NIKKOR brand with various promotions in 2013. The first step toward achieving this objective is the creation of a NIKKOR 80th anniversary logo that will be used in Nikon product brochures, advertisements, and various other forms of communication. The anniversary logo will embody NIKKOR’s image of taking the lead in every age based on optical technologies developed over its long history.

NIKKOR’s history began in 1932 with Nikon’s (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) registration of the NIKKOR trademark, soon followed in 1933 with the first shipment of Aero-Nikkor aerial photographic lenses. Since then, Nikon has continued to develop lenses for both film and digital cameras. Always loaded with cutting edge optical technologies of the times, NIKKOR has grown to be a brand known for high-performance lenses.

In 1959, Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released its first SLR camera, the Nikon F as well as its first lens for Nikon SLR cameras, the NIKKOR-S Auto 5cm f/2. The Nikon F mount, adopted for the Nikon F, continues to be the mount used in the latest Nikon digital-SLR cameras. In addition, with the release of the new Nikon 1 series of advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses incorporating the new 1 mount, Nikon has steadily released dedicated 1 mount lenses developed with optical technologies cultivated over the years, advanced technologies, and offering the superior image quality users have come to expect since 2011. As a result, total production of NIKKOR lenses for cameras with interchangeable lenses reached 75 million in November 2012.

NIKKOR lenses are not limited to use by cameras with interchangeable lenses but are also integrated into Nikon’s COOLPIX series of compact digital cameras. Thus, NIKKOR lenses have been well received by a broad range of users, from entry-level to professional photographers. Nikon’s lineup of lenses for cameras with interchangeable lenses currently consists of more than 80 types of lenses, including fisheye lenses, ultra wide-angle lenses, super-telephoto lenses, zoom lenses, micro lenses, PC-E lenses, and 1 NIKKOR lenses for advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses. Nikon will continue to develop high-quality NIKKOR lenses that attract a wide variety of photographers.

The NIKKOR brand

NIKKOR is Nikon’s brand of photographic lenses. The NIKKOR name arose from adding “r”—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K., the original name used when the company was established.

The OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world’s first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements. The Ultra Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8, released in 1962, served as the template for projection lenses employed in Nikon IC steppers and scanners that currently boast some of the highest resolutions in the world. What’s more, NIKKOR lenses for the latest SLR cameras utilize a number of cutting-edge technologies that originated with the development of IC steppers and scanners, including Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a broad range of wavelengths.

From initial design to final packaging, production and quality is controlled in accordance with Nikon’s strict standards. The superior quality of NIKKOR lenses that respond to the needs of users is ensured with the highest quality designs and manufacturing, as well as very strict quality inspections.

Nikon Image Space

24 Jan

Nikon has announced the launch of its new, free image sharing and storage service, NIKON IMAGE SPACE (http://www.nikonimagespace.com), available online from January 28th[1]. NIKON IMAGE SPACE replaces Nikon’s previous image storage service, my Picturetown.

NIKON IMAGE SPACE is open to anyone – regardless of the camera make they use – who enjoy taking photos or recording movies.

This service makes it easy to upload, view, organize, and share photos and movies with greater convenience through sequential operation, which is achieved by a high speed system, an intuitive user interface (UI), a clear window layout, and a simple operation flow.

Zurab Kiknadze, Nikon Europe, comments: “Nikon has offered my Picturetown[2], our original online service for storing photos, since August 2007 – and it’s been very popular. However, we recognised that the time had come to give this service a complete overhaul – to create a new service that is more intuitive, fun and easier to use, and better integrated with the social networks that most people like to use. One of the best things about NIKON IMAGE SPACE is that it’s open to anyone – regardless of the make of camera they use. And it’s completely free.”

Further information on NIKON IMAGE SPACE will be presented at the Nikon Imaging Japan booth at the CP+ 2013 camera and photo imaging show to be held January 31st to February 3rd, 2013 at the Pacifico Yokohama (Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan).

Here are just some of the key features of NIKON IMAGE SPACE:

Two types of free accounts

NIKON IMAGE SPACE offers users a choice between two types of free accounts:

Basic accounts are available to anyone. Users of Nikon digital cameras have the additional option of upgrading to a Special account, using a dedicated application to verify Nikon digital cameras.  While both types of accounts are free of charge, the maximum storage space is 2 GB for Basic accounts and 20 GB for Special accounts. Special accounts also offer more advanced functions, including the ability to apply a password when sharing images, and a function that restricts image download.

Improved usability

Significant changes in window design make sequential image operations, from upload to viewing to organizing to sharing, smoother. In addition, a relaxing background colour has been chosen to be easier on the eye, and image layout has been adjusted for ease of use.

Greater performance as a Web system

Operation has been improved with faster system processing capabilities. NIKON IMAGE SPACE offers smoother, more natural operation with faster image upload and download, as well as faster response when images are manipulated.

Greater collaboration with social networking sites

Greater collaboration with social networking sites such as Facebook* and Twitter* expands the possibilities for sharing photos of your own special moments, and posting images from NIKON IMAGE SPACE is easier than ever.

Pedrosa and Marquez unveil new 2013 livery for the Repsol Honda Team

24 Jan

Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez revealed the new look Honda RC213V for the 2013 season during a crowded Team Launch to the international media, which was held at Repsol’s HQ in Madrid.

The exciting new graphic introduces a fresh style to the factory Honda Team who celebrate their 19th year in partnership with title sponsors, Spanish Oil and Gas giants, Repsol. Team riders for 2013, MotoGP runner-up Dani Pedrosa and Moto2 Champion Marc Márquez, dressed in the new team uniform provided by GAS, have enjoyed a long winter break, but both are eager to start the new season.

Shuhei Nakamoto, HRC Executive Vice-President was present in Madrid to introduce the riders and explain a new team structure for the coming season which will see Mr. Livio Suppo as Team Principal, Mr. Takeo Yokoyama as Team Technical Director and Mr. Hideki Iwano as Team Director. Former Technical Director, Mr. Shinichi Kokubu, will be the new HRC General Manager of the Technology Development Division.

Pedrosa and Marquez will have their first outing of 2013 when the team arrives in Malaysia for the first test, scheduled for the 5-7 February.

Dani Pedrosa

“I am very happy to have been here at Campus Repsol today, and to have been the one unveiling the bike and its new livery. We had run with the old design for a long time and I think that now is a good moment for a change. This year’s bike has a fresh touch to it, which can give us a boost at the races. I hope the fans like it too. I’m starting this preseason really keen, as at the Valencia test after the last race of 2012 we had so much rain that we couldn’t do much. I can’t wait to get to Malaysia and have a few days to put the bike through its paces, enjoy myself and see which parts we are going to use for the opening race”

Marc Marquez

“I have really been looking forward to this moment. I am very happy to have presented the new colour scheme for my move up from Moto2 to MotoGP. Seeing the bike painted with the Repsol and HRC logos makes you feel very satisfied with this new step forward –it makes you realise what a dream-come-true it is. I’m like a kid with new shoes! I enjoyed the atmosphere of the presentation a lot, and I was able to see that the press attention for MotoGP is light years ahead of that for Moto2. We’ll adapt to this, little-by-little. In the end, the important thing is what happens on the track, so I can’t wait for the Malaysia tests to start. I think that it was a very positive initiative to broadcast the presentation online, because I’m sure lots of fans would have liked to have attended t his event. I hope that they enjoyed it a lot”

Shuhei Nakamoto HRC Executive Vice-President

“In 2013 we will again have a very strong team – Dani comes into this season after a fantastic 2012 and with new motivation, Marc is a great talent and I’m sure it won’t be long before we see him on the podium. I am excited about the new structure and everyone at HRC will continue to work hard in the bike’s development to give both our riders the best chance of victory”

Livio Suppo Team Principal

“I’d like to thank HRC for their trust in me. I will do my best to merit my new role and hope to assist in the Team’s success. I know that we can count on two very strong riders, a formidable machine, a great international crew and the great support of Repsol and all our sponsors. Together we will all do our best to keep the Repsol Honda Team at the top of MotoGP”

Hideki Iwano Team Director

“I am very happy to be working with the Repsol Honda Team again this year. I am confident that Dani will maintain his good momentum from 2012 and will fight hard for the title once again this season. Marc is a rookie in the MotoGP class but I am sure he will demonstrate his remarkable talent to us this season. As Team Director of the Repsol Honda Team, it is my job to provide an environment in which everyone can maximise their ability”.

Takeo Yokoyama Technical Director

“I’ve been in the Honda family since 1996 and have learned a great deal. I have spent a lot of time working closely with Dani in the past few years and also with Shinichi Kokubu, who taught me a lot. I am very grateful to Honda Racing Corporation for giving me this opportunity, I am excited for what the future holds and hope that in 2013 we can recapture the Rider’s Championship!”

Transcend’s Copy Protection SD/microSD cards ensure the safety of valuable intellectual property by allowing access to media while preventing end users from making unauthorized copies.

For added value, any space not utilized by pre-loaded data can be freely used as a normal SD card. When the protected data is deleted, the previously occupied capacity will be released as free space. Another available option is to make the entire SD/microSD card read-only so that end users cannot write to, modify or delete any part of the card capacity; only executing pre-loaded content is allowed in this optional configuration.

Custom Card Reader to Control Access In view of data protection, Transcend’s SD/microSD cards are available in a bundle pack with Transcend’s USB 3.0 RDF5 card reader that acts as the only key able to unlock the card, and therefore eliminate any potential threat should the data fall into the wrong hands. Data can only be accessed when the SD/microSD card is inserted into the customized RDF5 card reader and connected to a computer. For an extra layer of security, SD/microSD cards can be pre-loaded with copy protected media and combined with the custom RDF5 card reader. As a result, individuals, schools, banks, the government, military and police personnel, software developers, etc. can rest assured that their sensitive data is fully protected against illegal duplication.

Host Device Authentication The compact dimensions and multi-platform compatibility of SD and microSD memory cards provide manufacturers of small form-factor devices with greater design flexibility and cost savings. Perfect for use in OEM applications such as portable multimedia devices and GPS navigation systems, Transcend’s Copy Protection SD/microSD cards can be customized with a card ID that is locked to a vendor’s specific host device. This will restrict use of the card to only the device to which the card is locked.
