Canon Celebrates Production of 90 million EF Lenses

29 May

The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company’s manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.

EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units and now, a little over nine months later, the company commemorates its latest manufacturing milestone of 90 million lenses.

Canon’s proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element, and Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology.

With the introduction in May this year of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes possible a 200-560 mm focal length range, along with EF Cinema Lenses for digital cinematography, Canon’s extensive EF lens-series lineup now comprises a total of 84 models.

Canon will continue refining its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers-from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals-while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

Super GT 2013 @ Sepang Kicks Off

21 May

Autobacs Super GT 2013 Round 3 will be held at the Sepang International Circuit from June 15-16. Formerly known as the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC), the Super GT Series is a grand touring car race series promoted by the GT Association (GTA). It was first established in 1993 by the JAF (Japanese Automobile Federation) via GTA.

The Malaysian round of the Autobacs Super GT Series is being organised by JPM Motorsport and this will be the 13th consecutive year that the Series is back in town to thrill the fans. It is also the 20th year since the championship has been organised by the GTA.

For 2013, JPM Motorsport has come up with the theme of having a 5-star Super GT, with supporting events like the Affin Bank Motorshow, a Japan Town by Saschi, the Biggest Superbike Gathering and a Dash Berlin Rave Party. As with previous years’ Super GT, fans can meet and greet the drivers and teams during the Pit Walkabout, where the Race Machines and their Racequeens will be present. On Saturday (June 15) itself, the Pit Walkabout session is free for children under 12 and their accompanying parents too.

This year’s event will also witness the very first Asia Cup race organised by Meritus. Off the race tracks, grass root racing activities in the form of the Ultra Racing Gymkhana & Drifting, will encourage enthusiasts to compete.

The Affin Bank Motorshow has an exhibition space the size of the entire mall area of the Sepang International Circuit, which is approximately 7,500 square meters. Though similar in size to 2012’s event, it incorporates innovative elements, namely SummerNat in addition to the amazing cars displayed by Japanese brands like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru and European marquee like Porsche and Lamborghini.

JPM Motorsport will also exhibit and host a competition for Custom cars and Bikes alike while SummerNat is Australia’s premier event for street machines – an event gathering for local exotic and custom muscle cars as well as other street machines which will take place in Malaysia and co-organised by JPM Motorsport in the later part of this year.

Tickets for the Malaysian round of the Super GT are priced at RM100, and fans can obtain them online via or tune in to the entire season’s updates on

Pedrosa Wins French MotoGP; Crutchlow 2nd and Marquez 3rd, Lorenzo 7th

19 May

Dani Pedrosa has become the first rider to win two races in the 2013 MotoGP season, coming from sixth position on the grid in mixed conditions at Le Mans. He now leads the championship from Repsol Honda Team partner Marc Marquez, who fought to the podium after a poor start as Britain’s Cal Crutchlow finished second.

For the second year in succession, the field was presented with a wet track for the start of the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France. All competitors duly elected to fit the Soft compound wet weather tyres for both front and rear wheels, although this resulted in an extremely difficult final handful of laps as the tarmac dried out.

Pedrosa’s ride to a first victory at Le Mans in the premier class was a calculated but exciting one. Having crashed in qualifying, he stayed out of trouble at the start and passed Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo. The Honda rider then caught Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso, who had fought into the lead from a front row start and continually re-passed Pedrosa whenever the latter made a mistake. The final swapping of places came at half distance.

The weekend has been a memorable one for Crutchlow. On Saturday the Englishman sustained a fracture to the top of his shin bone, causing immense pain in the knee, but from fourth on the grid he made the most of the mixed conditions and stormed passed old teammate Dovizioso in the closing stages. The Ducati rider led for a chunk of the race and ultimately just missed out on a rostrum result as Marquez – championship leading heading into the day – fought back from a poor getaway and a selection of off-track moments. He therefore maintains his 100% podium finish record for 2013.

Nicky Hayden confirmed Ducati’s strongest day of the campaign to date by finishing fifth from GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista, but it was a somewhat disastrous afternoon for Yamaha Factory Racing. Lorenzo struggled to make an impression and slid down the order to seventh, whereas Valentino Rossi – who had previously battled with his teammate – fell while under pressure from Hayden. The Italian recovered to 12th behind Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone, as his temporary teammate Michele Pirro rose to ninth ahead of Tech 3’s Bradley Smith.

Aleix Espargaro again celebrated the top CRT spot in 13th, although the Power Electronics Aspar rider had to fight past Came IodaRacing Project’s Danilo Petrucci and took advantage of a crash for teammate and local favourite Randy de Puniet. Bryan Staring (Gresini), Claudio Corti (NGM Mobile Forward Racing), Lukas Pesek (Ioda) and Yonny Hernandez (PBM) also all retired but no rider suffered injury.

Pedrosa’s fourth win in France across the three classes makes him the championship leader, as the 2012 runner-up is now up to 83 points and six ahead of teammate Marquez. Honda leads the Constructors’ Championship from Yamaha by 14 points, with Repsol Honda Team now 47 ahead of Yamaha Factory Racing for Teams’ honours. The battle will continue at Mugello in Italy on June 2.

Marquez Takes Pole for French MotoGP, Lorenzo 2nd and Dovizioso 3rd

18 May

Marc Marquez has collected a second MotoGP pole position for this weekend’s Monster Energy Grand Prix de France. The championship leader beat current title holder Jorge Lorenzo by just three hundredths of a second as Andrea Dovizioso celebrated his first front row for Ducati Team. Jerez winner Dani Pedrosa will start sixth after crashing.

The majority of those in the paddock expected rainfall for qualifying, but this was not to be the case as a steady breeze graced the historic Le Mans venue. Delivering an impressive lap time of 1’33.187, Marquez looked to have convincingly sealed his second pole after Texas but was challenged hard by Lorenzo. With Dovizioso taking his first front row since Malaysia 2012, today’s result also marks the first time that the Honda, Yamaha and Ducati factory outfits have shared Row 1 since Spain 2012.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow came back from a heavy crash at La Chapelle in final practice to achieve the fourth best grid spot and will share the second row with LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl and the aforementioned Pedrosa, who was forced to rush back to the pits with less than ten minutes to go after repeating an error made by Repsol Honda Team partner Marquez (but in final practice for the latter) and falling at Turn 3. He eventually missed out on the top spot by half a second.

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi hopes to become the fourth winner from four races this weekend, but could muster only eighth in qualifying and will be flanked on Row 3 by GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista and Tech 3’s Bradley Smith, who with ninth place equals his best grid position of the season so far. Nicky Hayden completed the top ten for Ducati as Power Electronics Aspar successfully saw two CRT riders into the Q2 for the first time; although he was quicker than his teammate in Q1, local hero Randy de Puniet could not out-qualify teammate Aleix Espargaro when it came to the all-important final shootout.

Elsewhere, Michele Pirro qualified 14th and one place behind Pramac Racing teammate Andrea Iannone as he stands in for the recovering Ben Spies, while Colin Edwards was highly optimistic with the latest evolution of his FTR frame and went on to qualify 17th for NGM Mobile Forward Racing. On his return, Karel Abraham – with seven screws and a plate in his right shoulder following a collision in Austin – was, like Iannone, still in some pain but managed to achieve a sixth row placing.
