Marc Marquez has won Sunday’s Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, becoming the youngest ever back-to-back race winner in MotoGP. The Repsol Honda Team rider extended his championship lead while LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl celebrated a first premier class podium finish from pole position. Valentino Rossi held off Alvaro Bautista for the final rostrum spot.

On Saturday, Bradl had stormed to a maiden pole position while Marquez suffered a crash in qualifying. On Sunday, the Spaniard patiently followed the German before pulling off a clean manoeuvre at the end of the 19thlap. Five riders failed to make the distance at the notoriously difficult anti-clockwise circuit, the shortest on the calendar.

Marquez’s third victory of the year equals the sum of reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. The Repsol Honda rider sank as low as fourth after a poor start, but stayed ahead of Bautista in the early stages and crucially pulled off a confident pass on Rossi at the world-famous Corkscrew corner. He soon homed in on Bradl, overtaking the German and winning by 2.2 seconds. In doing so, Marquez wins for the second time within the space of a week and steals former double champion Freddie Spencer’s record of being the youngest MotoGP™ rider to triumph in consecutive Grands Prix. Furthermore, he makes history by becoming the first rookie rider to win at Laguna Seca.

Bradl’s ride to second was one of calm and composure. A clean getaway allowed the LCR Honda MotoGP rider to head the field from his first ever pole in the top class. The 2011 Moto2™ World Champion was assisted by the fact that those behind him were battling early on, but by the 17th tour had the recovering Marquez only two tenths of a second behind. Once the overtake had occurred two laps later, Bradl comfortably managed a two-second gap back to Rossi to clinch his maiden premier class podium, improving on his previous best of fourth – achieved on three occasions.

Having not finished on the podium until he won Round 7 at Assen, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Rossi has now taken the chequered flag inside the top three for as many races in a row. The Italian, who had famously overtaken Casey Stoner at the Corkscrew five years ago, was this time passed in the same place by Marquez before holding off a significant attack from Bautista over the closing laps; the Spaniard briefly edged ahead before the final corner, but was kept behind. Another third place for Rossi sees him jump ahead of Cal Crutchlow for fourth in the standings.

Laguna Seca had always promised to be a weekend of damage limitation for both Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing) and Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team). Both men continued to suffer with left collarbone injuries as they finished fifth and sixth, with Pedrosa having moved ahead of his rival in an overtake at the Andretti Hairpin. The duo finished in front of Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Crutchlow, who on Saturday had been left confused by a crash before taking part in Q2 with his second bike.

The top ten was completed by Ducati Team’s Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso – who during the race made side-to-side contact on the start/finish straight – and Avintia Blusens’ Hector Barbera, who became the first rider other than Aleix Espargaro to lead the CRT runners in 2013. Espargaro crashed at the last corner, while Power Electronics Aspar teammate Randy de Puniet retired with technical problems. Tech 3’s Bradley Smith also stopped with mechanical gremlins, while the first two retirements were PBM’s Michael Laverty and NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Claudio Corti.

In 11th, Ignite Pramac Racing’s Alex de Angelis scored while covering for the injured Ben Spies, while Colin Edwards finished 12th for Forward Racing. The top 15 was completed by Danilo Petrucci (Came IodaRacing Project), Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing) and Yonny Hernandez (PBM).

With the first half of the season now complete, MotoGP heads into its summer break before returning at Indianapolis in mid-August. Marquez carries a 16-point advantage over teammate Pedrosa and has finished on the podium in eight of his first nine races since joining the premier class as reigning Moto2 World Champion.

Bradl Takes Pole for US MotoGP, Marquez 2nd and Bautista 3rd

Germany’s Stefan Bradl has achieved a first ever MotoGP pole position for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. The LCR Honda MotoGP rider will start alongside Repsol Honda Team’s Marc Marquez and GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista. Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa have qualified sixth and seventh, respectively.

Courtesy of a 1’21.176 lap time, Bradl becomes the first ever German to clinch pole in the premier class of the World Championship. Not only is he the second rider to clinch a maiden pole this season, but he has also become the first ever rider to achieve the qualifying top spot at Laguna Seca aboard a satellite machine.

Marquez – whose challenge ended with a crash at Turn 6, four minutes before the chequered flag came out – was 17 thousandths of a second slower on his first weekend at the Californian circuit, having topped three or the four practice sessions, while Bautista starts on the front row for the first time since taking pole position at Silverstone last year. Row 2 is headed up by Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi, ahead of Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow who appeared late in Q2 on his second bike, having crashed his first at Turn 3 during final practice.

Rossi’s teammate Lorenzo, still suffering from a broken and very painful left collarbone and who missed last weekend’s German Grand Prix, will set off from sixth place and the back of the second row. Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was also absent from the Sachsenring race as well as Free Practices 1 and 3 here; he – similarly suffering with his left collarbone – will head up Row 3, having moved into the shootout from Q1 for the first time, ahead of Ducati Team’s Andrea Dovizioso who jumped ahead of Tech 3’s Bradley Smith late in Q2.

Americans Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards will start tenth and 15th for their respective Ducati Team and NGM Mobile Forward Racing outfits, but compatriot and wildcard entrant Blake Young has withdrawn from the event after damaging his sole Attack Performance Racing APR frame in a crash on Friday. There was also a crash for Randy de Puniet, as the Frenchman – who had reached Q2 for the third time this year – went down at Turn 3. He will start 12th, ahead of teammate Aleix Espargaro who led the CRTs for the ninth time in as many races this season.

In 14th spot will be Ignite Pramac Racing’s Alex de Angelis, making a one-off return to the top class from Moto2™ as a substitute for Ben Spies, who is set to make a comeback at Indianapolis following the summer break. Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone, who would have been alongside de Angelis in the garage, has not travelled to the USA after dislocating his right shoulder last time out in Germany. Another faller in qualifying was Karel Abraham (Cardion AB Motoracing, 19th on grid), who went down and slid across the Turn 10 gravel trap in Q1.

Marc Marquez Wins German MotoGP, Crutchlow 2nd and Rossi 3rd

14 Jul

Photo: Dorna Communications

Marc Marquez has won the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, picking up his second MotoGP victory and seventh podium finish from eight races. In the absence of both Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, the same three riders were on the podium as at the Dutch TT, with Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi second and third respectively.

The Sachsenring delivered another highly dramatic weekend, not least as numerous riders have suffered crashes. Crutchlow was one of them, heading into the race with injuries to his arms, hands and left leg, but heavy impacts for World Champion Lorenzo and erstwhile championship leader Pedrosa left both on the sidelines; the Yamaha Factory Racing rider bent the titanium plate in his shoulder, while the Repsol Honda Team rider sustained a small fracture, also to the left collarbone.

With both of his major rivals out of contention, Marquez – starting on his third pole position of the season – knew that a second race win (after Austin, Texas) would allow him to snatch back the advantage in the title race. A poor start saw the 20-year-old rookie drop to fourth place, but he picked off those ahead of him one by one and took the lead from home rider Stefan Bradl at the end of the sixth lap. Once Crutchlow took second, the Spaniard would manage the gap and win by 1.5 seconds.

Crutchlow’s own race started from second. Fighting the pain of his injuries after two large accidents on Friday, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider dispatched of Alvaro Bautista and Bradl before stealing second from Valentino Rossi in a strong move at Sachsen Kurve on Lap 16. He then looked to threaten for a career-first victory, but Marquez had been looking after his tyres and was able to comfortably control the gap until the end of the 30th and final lap; nevertheless, Crutchlow becomes the first British rider since Barry Sheene in 1982 to collect four podium finishes in one season.

Having returned to winning ways at Assen, Rossi has now claimed consecutive rostrum placings. From his first front row start since the Portuguese Grand Prix of 2010, the Yamaha Factory Racing rider seized the lead as the red lights went out. He proceeded to battle with local favourite Bradl but was overhauled by eventual winner Marquez on Lap 5. Three laps later, Rossi passed the Bradl to go second, but then fell back to the final podium spot when Crutchlow steamed ahead.

Bradl’s fourth place for LCR Honda MotoGP may have meant that he has still missed out on the podium, but the German has again equalled his career-best result. GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista completed the top five from eighth on the grid, while Tech 3’s Bradley Smith ended his day sixth – confirming two British riders in the top six of a premier race for the first time in two decades – from the impressive Aleix Espargaro; from fifth on the grid, the Power Electronics Aspar rider rode his CRT-specification bike in as high as third place before feeling the wrath of the prototypes.

Further down the order, the final points went to 13th-placed Colin Edwards (NGM Mobile Forward Racing) and the two riders who a day earlier had passed through to the Q2 shootout from Q1, with Danilo Petrucci and Claudio Corti 14th and 15th for Came IodaRacing Project and NGM Mobile Forward Racing, respectively. Two riders failed to see the end of the race, as there were crashes for both PBM’s Yonny Hernandez and Gresini’s Bryan Staring.

Round 9 of 18, the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix, will be staged at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca next weekend. This, the second leg of the first double-header this year, will bring the curtain down on the first half of MotoGP 2013. Marquez now carries a two-point championship lead over Pedrosa, with Lorenzo 11 behind the leader.

Marquez Takes Pole for German MotoGP, Crutchlow 2nd and Rossi 3rd

13 Jul

Marc Marquez has collected his third MotoGP pole position for this weekend’s eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. As injured title rivals Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa both sat out after crashes, the Repsol Honda Team rider beat Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow and Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi.

Since practice action commenced on Friday, a number of incidents have been witnessed at the Sachsenring, not least for title holder Lorenzo and current championship leader Pedrosa who both have injured left collarbones after highside crashes. Lorenzo will miss at least this race, whereas in Pedrosa’s case it remains to be seen as to whether he will be able to rejoin the action on Sunday.

Marquez’s lap of 1’21.311 was within three tenths of a second of Casey Stoner’s best ever lap of the Sachsenring – which had been achieved in the era of qualifying tyres in 2008 – as he stormed to his third pole, after Texas and Le Mans. Crutchlow will start inside the top two for the third race in succession, despite two heavy falls on Friday which have left the Englishman in pain, while the front row start for Rossi is his first in 988 days; his last had been at the Portuguese Grand Prix of 2010.

Row 2 is headed up by LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl at his home event, whereas a top five result came thanks to a stunning effort from Aleix Espargaro on the Power Electronics Aspar CRT machine. Ducati Team will line up sixth and ninth, better than Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso had expected, whereas Tech 3’s Bradley Smith and GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista will fill slots seven and eight. Pedrosa was classified 12th, but was unable to take part in qualifying.

Highly impressive performances from Danilo Petrucci and Claudio Corti saw the pair of Italians topping Q1 and thus progressing to the Q2 shootout for the first time; Corti will start tenth on the grid for NGM Mobile Forward Racing, whereas Petrucci experienced an issue in Q2 and will set off from 11th for Came IodaRacing Project.

At the back of the grid and in 23rd place will be Energy T.I. Racing’s Andrea Iannone, who dislocated his right shoulder in a crash during the final practice session. Hector Barbera (Avintia Blusens, 14th) was also in discomfort after twisting his right ankle in morning practice, whereas GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Bryan Staring was left 22nd fastest after suffering a large highside on the exit of Turn 3.

Sony Malaysia Launches New VAIO Duo 13 Ultrabook Hybrid

10 Jul

Sony Malaysia today announced new additions to the 2013 VAIO line-up with the introduction of VAIO Duo 13 and VAIO® Pro 13/11. Designed to enhance individuals’ lifestyles, the new slider hybrid PC, VAIO Duo 13, and mobile VAIO Pro 13/11 complete the 2Q 2013 VAIO line-up with the existing entertainment-centred VAIO Fit 14.

VAIO Duo 13 and VAIO Pro 13/11 harness Sony’s innovative display, digital imaging, and sound technology, as well as provide a wealth of new personal computing experiences. “Our aim with these unique new models is to provide customers with a variety of new ways to use their PCs. We have achieved this by combining powerful Sony technologies with new form factors,” said Satoshi Hatano, Director of Sony Malaysia, “We’re aiming to make devices that will enhance and enrich individuals’ lifestyles in both work and play. One example of this is the VAIO Duo 13’s camera functionality. It has the ability to take crisp images of documents using the computer’s camera as if it were a scanner. Images are clear enough to recognize and tag text, allowing for easier, more effective and efficient searching and editing.”

VAIO Duo 13 is a slider hybrid Ultrabook which provides a multitude of new use solutions with its unique form factor as well as accurate & versatile pen solutions. The Surf Slider design allows for a quick and seamless transition between slate and keyboard modes. Sliding the screen back while in slate mode reveals a keyboard and a touch pad and returning it to its original position will put the VAIO Duo 13 back in slate mode, favouring touch and pen manipulation. While in slate mode, users can easily operate VAIO Duo 13 by touch or with its digitizer stylus, whilst keyboard mode perfectly accommodates conventional PC usage such as quickly editing documents. The convenience of slate mode, combined with the efficiency of keyboard mode, creates a greatly improved PC experience.

Active, even during sleep & longest[1] battery life[2]

VAIO® Duo 13’s innovative standby technology offers many advantages. For example, VAIO® Duo 13’s constant connection to the internet, even while in sleep mode, gives it the ability to continue updating applications and receiving emails when it’s asleep. On top of this, VAIO Duo 13’s ability to wake from sleep mode in less than one second eliminates the need to wait for the PC to resume.

[1] As of June 5th, 2013

[2] The battery life is 15 hours based on MobileMark 2007. This is equal to 18 hours in JEITA-BAT1.0, 11 hours in JEITA-BAT1.0 (a) and 10 hours in MobileMark 2012. The actual battery run time will vary depending on the settings and usage condition.

However, the most incredible part of this technology is that VAIO Duo 13 is able to provide these benefits without compromising battery life. On the contrary, VAIO Duo 13 has the longest1 battery life2 compared with any Ultrabook.

Camera & pen solutions

VAIO Duo 13’s 8M built-in rear camera featuring the “Exmor RS for PC” image sensor has made it possible, for the first time, to take images of documents clear enough for the computer to recognize and tag text. By including the “Exmor RS for PC” image sensor in the VAIO Duo 13’s 8M built-in rear camera, Sony has made it possible to tag text in photos taken of documents and blackboards. This ability, combined with the “CamScanner” application, allows the VAIO Duo 13 to be used as if it were a scanner snapping, tagging and saving pictures of documents and whiteboards with ease. “CamScanner” also has the ability to straighten images of documents and photos taken at odd angles; allowing individuals to focus on taking photos of important material instead of lining up the perfect shot.

VAIO Duo 13’s OptiContrast panel allows for a more accurate and natural writing experience when using the digitizer stylus. The digitizer stylus enables users to take notes in the memo taking application, “Note Anytime for VAIO,” or easily create their own works in “Active Clip” using pictures stored on their PC. TRILUMINOS Display for mobile allows users access to a wide palette of rich natural colours thanks to Sony’s BRAVIA expertise. This technology has made it possible to express differences in colour more accurately. It can display the subtle differences of various reds, blues, and greens, as well as emerald green. For example, TRILUMINOS Display for mobile has the ability to reproduce the variety of reds found in a rose or blues in the sky.

Combine TRILUMINOS Display for mobile with a full HD display and Sony’s super resolution technology, X-Reality for mobile, and users are in for a treat. X-Reality for mobile analyses each image and reproduces lacking pixels to optimize quality for the sharpest videos. It analyses elements depending on the scene and adjusts them based on pattern, outline and colour composition. It strengthens subtle patterns and accurately portrays their detailed feel, as well as reinforces bold outlines. It also enhances colour composition, vividly reproducing hard-to-display natural colours.

Casio has 2 new EXILIM digital cameras, the EX-TR15 and EX-TR10. These cameras are equipped with Skin Brightening Mode for even more beautiful photos of people and are designed to make taking self-portraits easier than ever before by delivering a whole new shooting experience.

Casio first released the EXILIM TR Series in 2011. The cameras in this series, equipped with 360° rotating frame and a 270° rotating display, are optimized for self-portraits. They also have a Make-up Mode for taking beautiful face shots. These features have made this series very popular among young ladies.

The new EX-TR15 and EX-TR10 are designed to look beautiful from any angle. They also add a new function called Skin Brightening Mode to Make-up Mode, which makes skin look even more clear and beautiful. Further, these cameras are designed to make taking self-portraits easier than ever before. This was accomplished by adding a self-portrait shutter button to the frame, which makes it simple to press while holding the camera frame with one hand. Also, the EX-TR15 comes with Wireless LAN, enabling users to control the camera remotely using a smartphone. This makes it possible for users to angle the camera any way they like, including side angle, front angle, and back shots, and then take a photo at the timing and pose they desire. Both models display photos very vividly with 920K pixel displays.

Make-up Mode now offers two options: Natural Mode and the new Skin Brightening Mode, which produces a smooth, luminous skin appearance. Each mode provides 12 selectable make-up levels for the desired skin appearance.

With the new self-portrait shutter button on the frame, it has never been easier to take a self-portrait. In addition, the EX-TR15 comes with Wireless LAN, enabling remote viewing and control of the camera from a smartphone. This makes it possible for users to angle the camera any way they like, including angle and back shots, and then take a photo at the timing and pose they desire.

Casio EXILIM Remote application is required to control the camera from a smartphone. This application will be made available for download from the App Store for iPhone users and from Google Play for Android users. EXILIM Remote will be released at the same time as the EX-TR15.

Canon Announces EOS 70D with Dual Pixel Liveview Autofocus

02 Jul

Canon today unveils an outstanding new addition to its world-famous EOS series – the EOS 70D. Designed for aspiring enthusiast photographers, the EOS 70D is the ideal camera for anyone looking to take their photography to the next level. It combines completely new, world-first Canon imaging technology with powerful, creative and wireless sharing features – delivering a responsive, all-purpose camera ideal for capturing the moment with stunning images and Full HD video.

The EOS 70D features a new 20.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, designed and manufactured by Canon. It’s the first Digital SLR in the world to feature ground-breaking Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which delivers smooth and accurate autofocus (AF) when shooting Full HD movies and fast AF acquisition when shooting in Live View mode. Paired with the 14-bit DIGIC 5+ processor and 19-point all cross-type AF System, the EOS 70D captures incredible, full resolution images at up to 7 frames per second, with up to 65 JPEG or 16 RAW images in a single burst*. Additionally, a native ISO range of ISO 100-12800 enables photographers to shoot in lower light conditions and use faster shutter speeds whilst retaining high image quality.

Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides swift AF performance when shooting in Live View mode and smooth accurate focus for Full HD movies. It makes it easy for users to take their next step with movies, enabling them to keep moving subjects in sharp focus and create professional-looking pull-focus effects. The technology utilises advanced CMOS architecture, allowing two photodiodes to be mounted within each pixel, both of which can be read independently to achieve autofocus, or together for image capture, with maximum image quality at all times.

An advanced AF system for stills includes 19 cross-type AF points spread across the frame, providing high speed, accurate AF – ideal for tracking sports and wildlife subjects as they move within the frame. The AF system is customisable, allowing photographers to adapt to the subject they’re shooting. AF points can be used individually, together in small groups, or as a wide active area for more unpredictable subjects. A dedicated AF area selection button, positioned conveniently next to the shutter release, enables quick switching between modes, without having to take the camera away from the eye.

The EOS 70D’s powerful specification is packed into an expertly-engineered body that’s designed for comfort and swift operation. The Intelligent Viewfinder, with 98 per cent frame coverage and 0.95x magnification, allows photographers to comfortably frame their images and visualise settings via the electronic overlay. Conveniently-placed controls provide instant access to the most frequently used settings, such as ISO, AF mode selection and metering, so users can quickly change settings and concentrate on capturing the moment.

A 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen with a sharp 1,040k dot resolution is ideal for video shooting, or composing images from unusual and creative angles. The screen is a capacitive type, which supports a series of multi-touch gestures including swiping and pinch-zooming – perfect for navigating menus, amending settings or flicking through images.

Clever connectivity for easy control and instant sharing

The EOS 70D is the latest EOS model to feature integrated Wi-Fi, providing the freedom to remotely control the camera, as well as share images. Using Wi-Fi connectivity, users can connect to the EOS Remote app and control a wide range of image settings, including ISO and exposure, as well as focus and release the shutter. Photographers can also remotely use Live View mode, as well as review and rate their images.

Instant creativity unleashed

The EOS 70D features a host of creative modes to make capturing unique images easy. In-camera HDR removes the challenges of shooting in tricky, high contrast situations, merging three exposures into one that captures more detail in both the shadow and highlight areas. With multiple-exposure mode, photographers can shoot and combine up to nine exposures into a single image, or use a range of Creative Filters to instantly change the style and look of their shot.

Experimenting with creative off-camera flash is easy, thanks to the Integrated Speedlite transmitter, which provides in-camera control of multiple Canon Speedlite EX flash units.

Creative Full HD Movies

Alongside beautiful stills, the EOS 70D allows photographers to create high quality movies with ease. Full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution video can be captured with a choice of selectable frame rates, including 30, 25 or 24fps, and 60 and 50fps at 720p, and a range of compression options for post-editing and sharing. Thanks to new Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Movie Servo AF mode tracks subjects as they move, or even as shots are recomposed, ensuring they’re always in focus. Alternatively, users can select different focus areas over 80 per cent of the frame** simply by tapping the touch-screen, even when recording – ensuring that movies stay sharp and clear if a subject moves or the user changes the composition of a shot.

Videographers can also enjoy stereo sound using the internal microphone, or enhance audio with the in-built external microphone input terminal. Full control over settings such as aperture and ISO is also possible within manual mode, giving users greater freedom as their skills develop.

A Revolution in Autofocus Unlocks the Potential of Live View
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is a groundbreaking technology from Canon that unlocks the potential of Live View, changing forever the way users will capture video and still images with a DSLR camera. Dual Pixel CMOS AF powers incredibly smooth and consistent autofocus – like that of a camcorder – so focus transitions are natural and subjects remain locked in even as they move. It also enables phenomenally accurate and faster-than-ever autofocus through an LCD monitor, allowing the user to realize the unique compositional freedom of angle that Live View is capable of providing. And the compatibility of Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 103* Canon EF lenses empowers the user with exceptional optical tools for nearly limitless creative options. All these remarkable advances are possible thanks to an innovative technological design. For the first time in an EOS camera, the individual pixels on the CMOS sensor are capable of both capturing light and performing phase-difference detection autofocus. This revolutionary leap in Live View autofocus performance cements Live View shooting as an outstanding complement to traditional viewfinder shooting, unleashing wonderful new possibilities for dynamic, creative, high quality video and still capture in more situations than ever before.

*Including older and discontinued EF lenses
