2015 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R: Ride to Seremban and Broga on Malaysia Day

16 Sep

IT is quite a hazy day, and not many of my biker friends are keen to have a ride to anywhere for a breakfast, preferring to stay at home on Malaysia Day, which is a national public holiday.

Anyway, three biker friends decided they wanted to ride to Seremban for a dim sum breakfast and asked me if I am keen to join them. I agreed and so we all met at the Petron station in Cheras as the RV point.

The three are Chee Leong (Ducati Multistrada 1200 S), Chin Bin (KTM 1190 Adventure) and Chiang (Ducati Monster 796) while me is riding the Ninja ZX-10R, which is “fresh” from being squeezed by a Hit & Run tipper truck the previous day, causing damages up to more than RM4,000!

The impact broke the right-sided bracket supporting the pillion footpeg and the exhaust pipe, hence the amount of damages caused. Having temporarily tied-up the broken bracket to its other half, the Ninja ZX-10R was ready to go for a ride to Seremban with the group.

We used Lekas Highway for our ride to Seremban city – while the Ninja ZX-10R is capable of hitting above 300km/h on the straights, I had restricted the bike to not more than 155km/h as I was not sure how well the temporary hook-up of the broken bracket would hold should I ride it above 200km/h. There was relatively very little traffic on Lekas today due to the public holiday as well as the haze so the 3 bikers were able to speed up and disappeared from my view while I maintained the Ninja at the cruising speed.

It took us approximately 40 minutes to reach Seremban and our dim sum breakfast lasted about an hour, after which we resumed our ride to Mantin, Broga and Semenyih towns. We stopped for a drink at Broga town and I proposed that the group ride back to Kuala Lumpur via the old twisty road to Pekan Bangi from Semenyih and they agreed.

I had previously recced that old route on 150cc and 250cc bikes but am not sure how our bigger bikes would be able to tackle twisty nature of it – whether we will be slow or otherwise could only be known after we have ride through it.

To my amazement, the Ninja ZX-10R took to the old route like a bee to honey despite its rather narrow design while the rest found the road to be a hassle for them to navigate. But I reckoned it was more to do with the 3 of them been first timers on that route rather than the inability of their respective bikes to tackle that narrow-winded territory.

The gap between the Ninja and the other 3 bikes was 3 minutes at the end of the winding route. From Pekan Bangi, we resumed our ride to New Bangi town and continued into the PLUS Highway to go back to our respective homes.

2015 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R: Group Ride To Ulu Yam/Goh Tong Jaya

13 Sep

It’s Sunday again, which means it is another weekend ride for the Cheras-based BAT bikers group, and today’s effort was ride to Ulu Yam Lama for breakfast, then resumed the journey up the winding Batang Kali/Goh Tong road up to Starbucks @ Goh Tong Jaya.

Our RV point for the ride was at Petron station in Jalan Kuching, near Tesco. The station is located not far from the roundabout below MRR2 that will lead us to Jalan Sungai Tua, which lead to Ulu Yam Baru and Ulu Yam Lama.

The fact the BAT bikers had scheduled a group ride today was good as it has been a while since the Ninja ZX-10R had any outing as it was mostly confined to city riding amidst the daily traffic congestion. That by itself is restricting the ZX-10R’s capability to just slow cruising although in a way, the Ninja is just excellent in handling the congestion as it is in navigating twisty old roads.

Having said that, the moment our group resumed the ride towards Goh Tong Jaya after breakfast in Ulu Yam Lama, the Ninja got off to another slow start – languishing most of the other bikers including those riding the Kawasaki Z800, ZX-636R and Honda CB650F. The ZX-10R was up to speed from the time the group left the Petron RV point up till arrival at Ulu Yam Lama for breakfast but somehow the rider (that’s yours truly) handling it seems to have hesitated in going faster, preferring to let the others overtake and disappeared from view.

There’s an understanding among all the riders in our group that “we do not wait for any slow rider to stifle the excitement of those who are faster” – meaning there are several “cigarette break stops” along the way where the latter ones would wait for the former to arrive before resuming the ride to the actual destination.

In addition, there is always one experience rider playing “sweeper” who would make sure that none of the slow riders get left behind or lost their way while getting left behind by the leading group particularly the newbies who have just joined our group for their first official outing.

The Ninja ZX-10R and me became the second sweeper rider after having languished behind the rest including the newbie riders on the way up to Starbucks @ Goh Tong Jaya.

Along with the official sweeper, I was among the last few riders to reach the final cigarette break stop prior to Goh Tong Jaya. The Ninja was working fine but somehow I wasn’t in the mood to go faster than anyone today as I was using the experience to study the effect of variable front suspension settings against the Bridgestone Batlax BT-016 tyres, which came as default items on the Ninja.

But once the group resumed the ride down to Karak Highway from our half an hour break at Starbucks, the Ninja was among the Top Five that reached the end of the Genting Highlands route at the bottom. After ensuring all the riders in our weekend ride had regrouped prior to reaching Karak Highway, we proceed to ride towards Bukit Tinggi to experience the twisty road up that resort.

After completing our ride up to the middle level of Bukit Tinggi area, we rode back to Karak Highway to start the journey towards Gombak Toll Plaza and from there, we all went home separately.
