2016 Ninja ZX-10R, J300 Scooter and Z125 Enter Malaysian Market

29 Nov

Ninja ZX-10R Winter

Ninja ZX-10R-1

Kawasaki Motors (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (KMSB) has officially launched three new motorcycles to join its line-up for 2016. The three models are the revised Ninja ZX-10R ABS sportsbike, the J300 scooter and the Z125 Pro.

The revised Ninja ZX-10R comes with a sales price of below RM99,000 without GST and is available in two versions = KRT and Winter. However, unlike Europe and North America, the Winter edition will be offered at the same price as the KRT version, and without the Akrapovic slip-on muffler.

Meanwhile, the J300 is an imported CBU scooter with a non-OTR price of below RM29,800 w/o GST. The Z125 Pro replaces the outgoing KSR110 as a mini naked sportsbike and has a non-OTR price of below RM9,900 w/o GST. All three models will be available from Kawasaki’s GT World, Ninja Shop and authorized dealers nationwide from February 2016 onwards.

Detail Shot

The 2016 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R ABS is as close as it gets to a racing-spec superbike. The new Ninja comes with an impressive arsenal of race-derived equipment developed with the input of Kawasaki Racing Team’s two World Superbike champions, Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea. Kawasaki has in fact spearheaded its promotional campaign with the “Get Closer” hashtag, implying how much the new model is similar to the actual superbike racer.

At a glance, the new Kawasaki ZX-10R looks quite alike to its predecessor. Under those familiar fairings lies a brand new machine that Kawasaki has left barely nothing untouched. Changes to the engine, chassis, suspension, fairings, electronics, brakes, and exhaust were all done based on feedback from Sykes and Rea, the very two riders who are most familiar with the Ninja ZX-10R ABS.

Kawasaki’s development team has redesigned or replaced almost all parts of the 998cc four cylinder in-line engine first introduced in 2011. New pistons, camshafts, cylinder head and primary gear, lighter crankshaft, redesigned porting with electronic throttle valves, 25% bigger airbox and thicker engine sidewalls are among the major changes involved. Innovative and practical engineering placed the brand new cassette-type transmission relatively high in the engine so that its removal could be done without having to drain the oil.

The cylinder head and crankshaft are all new and 20% lighter. This reduces engine inertia and allows the engine to spin up or slow down faster, which obviously improves acceleration and deceleration and also has the added benefit of helping the bike change directions more quickly as crankshaft inertia can blunt directional change quickness.

The new cylinder head’s intake and exhaust ports are now straighter and wider, allowing the flow of more air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber. Both the intake and exhaust ports are now polished, which helps improve flow, and the valves are now titanium for weight reduction.

The J300 scooter, also known as the “Urban Performer” is Kawasaki’s first scooter ever, and Malaysia is the first Asian country (outside Japan) to launch it. It requires more than just the two elements of comfort and convenience inherent in a big scooter. Realising the need for innovative urban transport solutions, KMSB made its first foray into the scooter market with the J300.

Blending sport, control, comfort and convenience, the J300 wraps it all in a distinctive design that makes it instantly recognisable as a Kawasaki Scooter. This will appeal to sports-minded riders looking for daily dose of fun from their commute.

With its angular lines and stylish headlight look, the J300’s sharp design borrows styling elements from the Ninja supersport motorcycles. The J300 reflects an imaginative look into the future, with a strong focus on the environment, personal transport and vehicle efficiency.

Powering the Z125 Pro is a horizontally-oriented 125cc air-cooled single cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission that churns out 9.5PS of maximum power at 8000 rpm and 9.5 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. The combination of an electric starter and fuel injection ensures hassle-free starting. The fuel tank capacity is 7.4 litres to promise a further reach. The model weighs in at just 101 kg and measures 1,700mm in length, 750 mm in width and 1,005 mm in height.

The Z125 Pro inherits many of the design traits from the larger Z models. It has features a narrow headlamp inspired from the Z800 and Z1000 and has a fairly large front fender, high mounted handlebar, muscular fuel tank, tank extensions and belly panel. The underbelly exhaust system is placed under the compact machine, while the fuel tank with a raised spoiler extends downwards. Like Z800, Z125 features the array of panelled aerodynamic edge sides, with the rear stop lights illuminates two ‘Z’ positioned opposite to each other to form a symmetry.

The bike features inverted forks at the front and off-set monoshock suspension at the rear. The bike features an aggressive styling in line with the Z series. The Kawasaki Z125 Pro is equipped with a pair of alloy wheels, 100/90-12 size for front and 120/70-12 size for rear tyre. The bike gets disc brakes at both front and rear, 200 mm up front and 184 mm at the rear.

The bike gets an analogue-digital instrument cluster on a LCD display. The TFT screen includes fuel gauge, gear indicator, odometer, trip meter and a clock. The Z125 Pro will be offered in two colours – Green and Orange.

Repsol Honda Completes Test in Spain

26 Nov

The Repsol Honda Team have completed its 3-day of post-season testing at the Jerez circuit in Spain. The team actually spent 4 days at the circuit, with Day 1 being semi-official as the riders and crew members began setting up the bikes with data gained from the previous test held at Valencia.

Marc Marquez was able to assess Honda’s 2016 engine after his fourth day of winter testing and stated that, although different in character to the one he raced in 2015, its power delivery is still too aggressive. With Honda switching to Magneti Marelli electronics for the first time in 2016, an overall package very much in its infancy meant neither Marquez nor team-mate Dani Pedrosa were able to fully understand the engine’s characteristics. Yamaha and Ducati fared better with the electronics as they are more familiar with the Marelli stuff.

However, by Thursday evening Marquez had explained how he had encountered similar problems to his first day of testing at Jerez with the electronics and Michelin tyres. In addition, the Spaniard found the engine to have too much power in the bottom end, with the torque delivery proving to be problematic and too aggressive in its nature. “Today I ride all day with the Magneti Marelli,” said the double MotoGP champion. “I didn’t try again the Honda software, I just concentrated on the Magneti Marelli. I tried both engines, but I really concentrated all day with the new engine. Because I think, already, working on the new electronics is slow, takes a lot of time, and I see that with the 2015 engine, and the 2016 engine, we need a completely different map.

“It’s a different character of engine. So we just concentrate on the new one, then maybe tomorrow we will try again the old one, but we will see, we must check well now. But still, with one engine or the other one, we are far from the best level of Magneti Marelli, I think. “It’s different,” he explained. “Last year’s engine was aggressive in the top. Now we have more power in the bottom, but still we don’t understand the way to deliver this torque. It looks like aggressive in the bottom, but then smoother in the top compared with last year, but the thing is that we can reduce, no? So we must work, because if we reduce too much, then we get aggressive in the top, so we must check to find the correct balance.”

Pedrosa was satisfied with his progress although he too feels that the 2016 Honda engine is just a little bit tamer than the 2015 version. He said the team was trying to make the correct choice for next year, and having a new engine to test, the feeling either comes right immediately or the other way, which made the decision much easier to take. But according to the Spaniard, the differences are a little bit less, so win and lose, win and lose. Even though the Open Class ceased to exist for 2016, all teams participating in the championship for 2016 will be imposed with engine freeze rules – no new engines after the season commences, and Honda has to finalize its engine development work to ensure both riders will not be facing the same problem encountered during the 2015 season.

Zaqhwan Zaidi Finishes 1st-runner-up in Malaysian Superbike Championship despite late comeback

22 Nov

India’s prolific rider Rajini Krishnan has been crowned as the inaugural champion of Pirelli Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSC) despite the gallant effort of Malaysia’s former Moto2 rider Muhammad Zaqhwan Zaidi to deny his rival of the Superbike overall title.

Trailing the Indian rider by 13 points at the start of the day, Zaqhwan, had to start from the back of the grid after skipping qualifying yesterday, cut the lead to just eight points after winning the opening race.

Riding a Honda CBR1000, Zaqhwan completed the incident-filled race, which was restarted with Zaqhwan restarting from eighth position, completed the nine-lap race in 20 minutes 15.521 seconds to gain 25 precious points; taking his total haul to 115 points. Rajini, who took second place, got 20 points; bringing his total to 123 points.

Again starting from the back of the grid for Race 2, Zaqhwan, who did not compete in the opening round to participate in the Moto2 World Championship, continued his sensational form to score his second victory for the day. Zaqhwan’s gallant effort, however, failed to earn him the coveted crown after Rajini secured second place to seal his first national crown.

Commenting on his performance, Zaqhwan said that he was satisfied with his performance and thanked his team – RND Plus Racing Team for this tireless effort especially in providing a very good machine for the race.

“Naturally, I am happy to score a double victory today. It’s not enough to win the championship, but there are no regrets. Both races were tough actually as I had to start from the back. We will now focus for next year and hopefully, we can win the title,” said Zaqhwan, who won the overall Superbike title last year under the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) banner.

A national multiple-champion in India, Rajini, who rides for Chia PJ Kawasaki for the MSC, expressed his delight in winning the overall Superbike crown.

“Actually, I did not push the bike to the max. Zaqhwan has the faster bike and I had to ride smart and just follow him to make sure to collect the championship points to win the overall title. With that achieved, we now look forward for next year to defend the crown,” added Rajini, who ended the season with 143 points and three points more than Zaqhwan.

Britain’s Steve Martin, who also competes in Superstock championship, had to be contended with third placing.

In the Superstock Championship, Steve, however, was in a class of his own as the British rider scored a double victory for the round to collect a perfect score of 50 points and taking his final total haul for the season to 220 points. Altogether, Steve has won eight of the nine races this season; finishing second to Ahmad Nashrul Baharuddin in Race 2 of Round 3.

“All in all, it was a great season for me and the team. Winning eight races and one second place is indeed remarkable. Despite having a massive lead in the championship, I still push hard to the maximum to win today. Nashrul was not racing today; if not the races would have much closer today. My only frustration this season will be my performance in Superbike Championship. We will need to evaluate our position and then decide what we want to do next season,” said the SBK Martin Racing team leader.

The battle for the 600cc Supersport Championship crown was closely contested by the BikeART Racing Kawasaki team-mates until the end with Muhammad Farid Badrul Hisam winning the overall title by a single point. At the end of Race 2 today, Farid, who won Race 1 but had to be contended with third in Race 2, took the overall crown by collecting a total of 196 points.

Second in Race 1, Hazlanshah took his total tally to 195 points after winning Race 2, which saw Muhammad Muzzakir Mohamed finishing ahead of Farid in second place and almost costing him the overall title.

“I made a mistake in Turn 9 on Lap 10 and was overtaken by Muzzakir. I know that I only need to take third to win the crown. So, I decided to play safe and just maintain third place. I am happy win the title again after winning it last year during the MSS. Hopefully, can make it third in a row next year,” said Farid.

The 250 Open Championship crowned Johor-born lady rider Siti Norafizah Muhammad as its inaugural champion under the MSC banner; finishing the 2015 season with a total haul of 203 points.

After scoring a double victory yesterday for Race 1 and Race 2, Norafizah, or just Fifi amongst friends, however, was unable to maintain her momentum; finishing today’s Race 3 and Race 4 in fourth and second placing respectively.

“Overall, I am happy to be champion again. Hopefully, this will open new doors for me in pursuance of my racing career. At the moment, I have no firm plans as yet … all depending on sponsorship,” said the 18-year old Johor-born rider.

Former Shell Asia Talent Cup, Muhammad Adam Norrodin, who was recently recruited as Drive M7 SIC Racing Moto3 Team rider won the overall title for MGP3 championship. After winning both Race 1 and Race 2 yesterday, Adam, however, was unable to maintain his form for Race 3 and Race 4 where he finished third and second respectively. Race 2 for the class today was topped by fellow SAATC rider, Muhammad Helmi Azman while Race 4 was won by Fakhrusy Syakirin.

In the Desmo Cup, Erwan Hassbullah was the star; scoring a double victory for the round. Winning the twice-interrupted Race 1 yesterday, the Team Project X rider topped Race 2, which proceeded smoothly for eight laps without any interruption.

Microsoft Malaysia Launches Surface Pro 4 Tablet

19 Nov

Microsoft Malaysia has announced the general availability of Surface Pro 4 throughout Malaysia. At only 8.4 mm thin, the new Surface Pro 4 comes with the latest operating system from Microsoft – Windows 10 Pro – together with 6th Generation Intel Core m, Core i5, and Core i7 processors, enabling everyone from students to professionals to get more done on the go. It is not only 30 percent more powerful than Surface Pro 3 but is also quieter, runs cooler and is more efficient with up to nine hours of battery life.

Housed in a sleek and sturdy magnesium case, the Surface Pro 4 features all the ports that make the Surface lineup unique, including a USB 3.0, microSD card reader and Mini Display Port. It also features a stunning, yet sensitive 12.3-inch PixelSense display with a 3:2 aspect ratio for comfortable viewing and note-taking.

New Surface accessories, such as the new and improved Surface Pro 4 Type Cover take Surface Pro 4 from tablet to laptop in an instant, and features a redesigned mechanical keyboard with optimal key spacing for fast and fluid typing. The redesigned Surface Pen lets you write, draw and mark documents with precision ink on one end and an eraser on the other.

Microsoft Malaysia have received remarkable success since the launch of the Surface Pro 3 last year, and continuously drove ourselves to create the most productive devices on the planet. The Surface Pro 4 packs more power in a slimmer, lighter form factor. The Surface Pro 4 is perfect for people who place a premium on portability, yet require more productivity and performance out of their devices.”

And this is certainly the case with Malaysian graffiti artist, Muhammad Fakhrul Akmal (also known as Mile09) and gifted savant artist Delwin Cheah, who use the Surface Pro 4 to conceptualize and design their artwork. This dynamic duo, with their very distinct styles of art, displayed their work at the media event today.

Akmal’s creation featured a 112 square feet graffiti mural portraying a perfect blend of traditional and modern aspects of Malaysia, which included the iconic KLCC Twin Tower, as well as more indigenous art forms like the Wau Bulan and Wayang Kulit.

“I wanted to highlight Malaysia from past to present. The Surface Pro 4 allowed me to do just that and the experience was exhilarating. The Surface pen and screen works precisely and as natural as a regular pen and paper. Once I’ve completed my sketch, it was easy for me to then visualize my artwork on a larger canvas. I also don’t have to worry about losing my artwork or damaging them as I now save them on OneDrive (Microsoft’s cloud storage system), and am able to retrieve and refer to them whenever I want,” said Akmal.

Speaking at the launch, Michal Golebiewski, Chief Marketing and Operations Officer, Microsoft Malaysia said that the Surface Pro 4 was the perfect device for millennials in Malaysia. “We are seeing an increasing number of young consumers who love to use Surface devices – Akmal and Delwin are two prime examples. In fact, 98 percent of Surface Pro 3 users would recommend a Surface device to friends and family. These young people demand ultra-portability and power at the same time, and we’ve given them what they desire through the Surface category.”

A recent Asia-Pacific survey conducted by Microsoft with 1,200 Asian youths under the age of 25 in 14 countries including Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Korea showed that 15 percent of Asian millennials already have a 2-in-1 device, while 42 percent wished to get a new 2-in-1, tablet or laptop device during the holiday season.

Golebiewski elaborates, “Surface Pro 4 arrives as consumers – particularly the millennials – are increasingly looking to refresh their technology as they look for simpler devices that bring the best of mobility and productivity. In fact, 59 percent say they want to have touch screens on all their devices and 41 percent want a digital pen to write on their devices. The Surface Pro 4 is the perfect 2-in-1 device to meet their needs.”

Beginning today, consumers can purchase the Surface Pro 4 and its accessories at the Microsoft Online Store on Lazada, as well as experience the Surface Pro 4 at any of the nine Microsoft Authorized Reseller Stores in the Klang Valley starting today. Consumers can also visit select Microsoft authorized retailers and businesses can contact commercial resellers starting next week for more information.

Akrapovič – the independent manufacturer of high performance racing exhaust pipes, is launching many new items for on- and off-road motorcycles along with the unveiling its latest concept muffler and celebrating a momentous event in the company’s history during the 2015 EICMA Show in Milan.

With the latest technological advances for all sectors of motorcycles on display, the Akrapovič stand at EICMA certainly showed the innovation and design capabilities of the company’s R&D department, including the first Titanium version of the (r)evolutionary Akrapovič Slip-On exhaust system, which is being exhibited at this prestigious show.

Designed for the Ducati Multistrada, it is constructed using high-grade Titanium, giving a huge weight saving over stock. Beautifully finished with a carbon fibre heatshield and end-cap, the exhaust offers an increase in performance and a deeper more rewarding sound, and represents Akrapovič’s unstinting desire to be the best.

Alongside this amazing muffler are exhaust systems for bikes as diverse as the ground-breaking Kawasaki Ninja H2R and the Ducati Scrambler, and the latest designs for mid-weight sports bikes such as the Honda CBR650F and for the lightweight category such as the Yamaha YZF-R3. These are complemented with a whole range of scooter exhaust systems for models as varied as the Honda Forza 125 and the Aprilia SRV 850.

At the show, Akrapovič also shows its latest concept muffler, which is directly evolved from the (r)evolutionary exhaust that was designed by Igor Akrapovič and launched at the Intermot show in Cologne last year, with the latest concept is a technical advance that incorporates a whole host of innovative features that have been developed by the company’s R&D department.

With special emphasis on meeting EC/ECE type-approval regulations, the new muffler also has a larger volume to meet these strict requirements. The new exhaust is distinctively a progression in the initial hexagonal muffler design and shows that the Slovenian exhaust specialists are constantly looking towards the future with their innovative and high-tech exhaust technology.

Akrapovič has a great racing heritage and is certainly a company that can be trusted by champions. This is being celebrated at EICMA as it commemorates a significant event in the company’s 24-year history.
